Strong association of HLA-DR2 and MT1 with idiopathic membranous nephropathy in Japan

Abstract: Fifty adult Japanese patients with biopsy-proven idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) were typed for HLA-A, B, and DR antigens, and additional B cell alloantigens designated the MT system. The phenotype frequencies of HLA-DR2 (80.0 vs. 36.0%) and MT1 (96.0 vs. 49.5%) appeared to be significantly increased in the patient group when compared to those of a control. There were lower frequencies of DR4, DRw9, MT3, and MT4 in these particular patients. The decreases of MT3 and MT4 were statistically significant b… Show more

“…A markedly higher occurrence of HLA-DR2 in pa tients with MGN was also reported by others [8,9] the data in each report being similar (from 74 to 80% in patients and from 36 to 39% in controls). The data were again combined and calculated.…”

“…The association of HLA-DR4 with IgA nephropathy might be consistent in Caucasians [1] and Japanese [2][3][4][5], but several reports also exist on the association of HLABw35 with IgA nephropathy [1], Idiopathic membranous nephropathy was associated with HLA-DR3 in Cauca sians [6,7] but with DR2 in Japanese [8,9], So, there have still been some discrepancies among studies and races investigated. There have been reports on the association of specific HLA antigens with lipoid nephrosis and post streptococcal glomerulonephritis in Caucasians as well as in Japanese.…”

“…In patients with IDDM in Japan, an increased frequency of HLA-A24 [9] and HLA-DR9 [8] has been reported. Furthermore, idiopathic membranous nephropathy in Japan is related to HLA-DR2 [25]. An immunological problem such as in the major histocompatibility complexes may play an important role in associated MCNS and IDDM in the present case.…”

“…There have been many studies on the HLA and HLA-linked complement (C2, C4A, C4B and BF) types in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis [Short et al, 1983;Rashid et al, 1983;Hiki et al, 1984;McLean et al, 1984;Tamura et al, 1984;Papiha et al, 1987], The C3 polymorphism has also been reported [Rashid et al, 1983;Wyatt et al, 1984], but C6 and C7 have not been studied before in these patients. We studied here the genetic polymorphisms of C6 and C7 in patients with three types of chronic glomerulonephritis (IgA-N, IMN and MCNS).…”

“…In patients with chronic glomeru lonephritis, the HLA and HLA-linked complement (class III antigens: C2, C4A, C4B and BF) types have been examined, and strong associations with these antigen types have been shown [Short et al, 1983;Rashid et al, 1983;Hiki et al, 1984;McLean et al, 1984;Tamura et al, 1984;Papiha et al, 1987]. However, these associationsseem to differ in different popula tions.…”
