Hospitalized children receive anxiety-triggering medical procedures, such as inhalation therapy. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be provided to reduce children’s anxiety is pop-it therapeutic play. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of pop-it therapeutic play on children’s levels of anxiety during inhalation therapy in children’s wards. This study used a randomized control trial involving 66 children aged 1–12 years who received inhalation therapy and were treated in the children’s ward from three hospitals in North Sulawesi. The respondents were divided into intervention and control groups, with 33 respondents for each group. The samples were selected using simple random sampling. Anxiety level was assessed using the Visual Facial Anxiety Scale. The findings showed that playing pop-it effectively reduced children’s anxiety levels during inhalation therapy, with a p value of 0.000 (α < 0.05). Therefore, playing pop-it is the right solution for children who receive inhalation therapy and is recommended as an alternative toy in hospitals. This finding can be applied in children who receive inhalation therapy because it is easy to do, efficient and effective controlling the children’s anxiety.

Bronşektazi, kronik inflamasyon ve enfeksiyonun bronş duvarlarında oluşturduğu hasara bağlı olarak bir veya birden fazla bronşta meydana gelen dilatasyon ve harabiyet ile karakterize kronik bir akciğer hastalığıdır. Hastalığın yönetiminde pulmoner rehabilitasyon önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Hastalık yönetimine ilişkin çalışmaların çoğu yetişkin grubu kapsamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın amacı, pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili hastalarda pulmoner rehabilitasyonun etkinliğini araştırmaktır. PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro ve TRDizin veri tabanları Aralık 2021’e kadar arandı. Pediatrik, adolesan bronşektazi hastalarında pulmoner rehabilitasyon, hava yolu temizleme teknikleri ve egzersiz içerikli tedaviler uygulanan ya da rehabilitasyona katkı sağlayacağı düşünülen çalışmalar dahil edildi. Toplamda 161 makale bulundu. Tam metinler okunduktan sonra belirlenen dahil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan 7 çalışma seçildi. Pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili hastalarda pulmoner rehabilitasyonun etkisiyle hastalık semptomları azaltılıp yaşam kalitesi arttırılabilir. Gelecekteki çalışmalarla pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili gruba yönelik fiziksel aktivite ve egzersiz önerileri fikir birliğinden ziyade kanıta dayalı olarak verilebilir.

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) is a highly prevalent chronic respiratory disease with substantial burden to both patients and health care systems. Persons with NCFB (pwNCFB) are often given complex acute and chronic treatment regimens consisting of medications, airway clearance techniques and exercise. Accordingly, the high burden in NCFB has contributed to lower therapy adherence with estimates of 53% to medications, 41% to airway clearance and only 16% to all prescribed therapy. Consequent clinical outcomes from lower adherence include reduced quality of life, accelerated lung function decline and recurrent pulmonary exacerbations. In this narrative review, we explore the impact of multifactorial mechanisms underpinning adherence in NCFB and evaluate the available evidence towards interventions to improve uptake of therapy as demonstrated in other chronic respiratory diseases. A holistic approach, starting with a careful review of patient adherence at regular intervals, may increase the success of multidimensional therapeutic interventions in pwNCFB, but robust ongoing studies are an area of need in this population.
