Stripping Voltammetric Determination of Mercury in Fish Oil Capsules Using a Screen‐printed Gold Electrode

Abstract: This work presents a simple electrochemical method for Hg determination in fish oil capsules using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) on a screen-printed gold electrode (SPGE). Samples were treated in an ultrasonic bath for 15 min in the presence of a 1 : 1 (v/v) concentrated HCl/H 2 O 2 mixture at room temperature. The method is precise (inter-day and intra-day RSD < 4 % for n = 3) as well as the SPGE sensors (RSD = 4.3 %, n = 3), which were used continuously (around 100 analyses without replacement) under su… Show more

“…In a study, Squissato et al (2018) investigated the mercury levels in fish oil using CV and SP electrodes. LOD was measured to be 0.25 μg•L −1 within a linear range between 5 and 400 μg•L −1 , and given the measured LOD, the mercury levels in fish oil were detected to be below the desired LOD.…”

“…Figure S5 shows the results obtained for current peak evolution for a solution of 30 ng mL –1 Hg(II) in 0.1 M HCl along 100 measurements on the LT-SPGE under 300 rpm of stirring rate. We choose this rate as a good compromise between high signals and signal stability, although according to Squissato et al, 32 higher stirring values are also applicable. RSD was 8% for the 100 measurements and 3% considering the first 50 measurements only.…”

“…Nevertheless, methods reported in the literature for voltammetric analysis focus on the soluble species Hg(II), most of them employing gold electrodes, including solid gold disk or gold film electrodes 25 28 or screen-printed gold electrodes, SPGEs. 29 32 …”

“…Standard solutions of HMs (Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ ) were added to the buffer solution. Square wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV) carried out firstly at a fixed deposition potential of −1.6 V for 120 seconds under stirring at 400 rpm for HMs pre‐concentration (which is an appropriate stirring velocity without causing any turbulence) . Stripping performed secondly with SWV in the potential range between −1.6 V and +0.4 V (step potential of 0.004 V, square wave amplitude 0.025 V and square wave frequency 15 Hz).…”
