Stress response of Escherichia coli to essential oil components – insights on low-molecular-weight proteins from MALDI-TOF

Abstract: The antibacterial effects of essential oils and their components (EOCs) are usually attributed to effects on membranes and metabolism. Studies of the effects of EOCs on protein expression have primarily analysed proteins larger than 10 kDa using gel electrophoresis. In the present study, we used MALDI-TOF-MS to investigate the effects of EOCs on low-molecular-weight proteins. From 297 m/z features, we identified 94 proteins with important differences in expression among untreated samples, samples treated with … Show more

“…Camele et al [ 28 ] described that the quorum sensing mechanism is deteriorated by the influence of EOs and that disrupting the quorum sensing mechanism can help to prevent biofilm formation. Moreover, the differences in protein production of bacteria stressed with EOs was evaluated with MALDI-TOF MS by Božik et al [ 29 ] demonstrating that EOs affect the production of ribosomal proteins and stress-related, membrane-related, and biofilm-related proteins.…”

“… In this dataset we provide MALDI-TOF MS spectra of Escherichia coli. The data presented in this article are related to the article entitled “Stress response of Escherichia coli to essential oil components – insights on low-molecular-weight proteins from MALDI-TOF” (Božik et al, 2018) [1] . Essential oils and their components are known for their antibacterial effect.…”

“…Here, since the detected proteins exhibit relatively low MWs (i.e., <10 kDa), CClCA produced a good spectrum, confirming its efficacy in promoting the ionization of peptides or small proteins compared to CHCA [ 32 ]. Although it is not possible to distinguish a protein from its intact molecular weight, a tentative assignment of peaks detected in Figure 7 A was pursued by combining literature data [ 58 , 63 ] with database mining. Specifically, the experimental m / z values were used as search parameters and were matched with sequence-derived theoretical MW values in the UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot database [ 58 , 64 ].…”
