Data on low-molecular weight proteins of Escherichia coli treated by essential oils components, tetracycline, chlorine and peroxide by MALDI-TOF MS

Abstract: In this dataset we provide MALDI-TOF MS spectra of Escherichia coli. The data presented in this article are related to the article entitled “Stress response of Escherichia coli to essential oil components – insights on low-molecular-weight proteins from MALDI-TOF” (Božik et al., 2018) [1]. Essential oils and their components are known for their antibacterial effect. Many studies evaluated the effect of essential oil components (EOCs) on the cell wall, bacterial membranes, and energetic metabolism. But data abo… Show more

“…As shown in Appendix C, Table C.1 lists the peaks of E. coli. directly analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Ions with peaks at m / z = 4365, 5381, 6255, 6411, 6849, 7274, 7871, 8604 and 9554 were reported in previous studies ( Yan et al, 2020 , Feng et al, 2020 , Božik et al, 2018 ). In the present study, based on the big datasets of mass spectra and 34 biomarker ions discovered by assistance of variables importance in projection (VIP) analysis, the ions with m / z = 4365, 4759, 5381, 6255, 6411, 6847, 7274, 7873, 8604 and 9554 with relatively large signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) are preferentially recommended as the biomarker ions for the identification of E. coli from different food matrices via MALDI-TOF MS.…”

“…The resistance of many bacteria strains to drugs, observed in recent decades, forced the use of combined treatments in contemporary medicine and veterinary. The antimicrobial action of EOs was empirically confirmed in many studies but their exact action mechanism has not been fully explained [ 3 , 29 , 33 , 34 ]. The synergistic reaction can result from the changes in the bacteria cell membrane permeability.…”

“…The cell membrane permeability barrier is indispensable for many functions, including but not limited to maintaining the cells’ energy status, transport of dissolved substances and metabolic regulation. It suggests that EOs’ antimicrobial mechanisms can be related to the cell wall degradation, cytoplasm coagulation, improved permeability leading to the cell content leak and reduction in the protonomotoric force [ 3 , 34 ]. A few papers report a higher antibacterial activity of antibiotics used in combination with EOs in in vivo tests [ 35 ].…”
