Stress Concentration Effects on Industrial Components

Abstract: This article demonstrates the importance of stress concentrations on the life of industrial components. The design review and analysis of maintenance tasks (repair) can foresee and avoid such harmful design defects and/or bad habits that can reduce component life in service. Three steel shop examples are mentioned and details of these selected situations are analysed using metallurgy and finite element tools.

“…Stress raisers have a great effect on crack initiation because of their effect on increasing the local stress or a decrease in the load-carrying capacity of the material [3], making it more susceptible to fatigue. From the configuration of pipe, the connection location between the pipe end and the casing-pipe is a transition step, which just became a stress concentrator and this is the most vulnerable site for fatigue initiation [2]. And the stress concentration created by the configuration was further aggravated by local positioned spot-welding at this location.…”

“…So it is important to assess impact from concrete shrinkage and to suppose possible areas of stress concentration. A concentration area develops in places where cross-section of structure changes, i. e. decrease (Viau 2010). Therefore, it is important to know these weak points and to solve the problem as per technological and structural aspect reducing the impact of stresses upon solidity of structure.…”
