Streptomyces spongiicola sp. nov., an actinomycete derived from marine sponge

Abstract: A novel actinomycete (strain HNM0071 T ) was isolated from an unidentified marine sponge collected from the coast of Sanya City, PR China and its taxonomic position was investigated.The major menaquinones were MK-9 (H 6 ) (65.6 %), MK-9 (H 4 ) (23.8 %) and MK-9 (H 8 ) (10.6 %). The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C 15 : 0 (25.5 %), iso-C 16 : 0 (19.5 %) and iso-C 15 : 0 (15.4 %). The predominant phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. In addition, four… Show more

“…Nitrogen source utilization was determined according to the method of Williams et al (1983). Susceptibility to antibiotics was tested according to Huang et al (2016). The antibiotics tested included chloramphenicol, kanamycin, gentamicin, streptomycin, nalidixic acid, penicillin G, rifampin, novobiocin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and tobramycin.…”

“…In recent studies, a variety of new species of actinobacteria from marine sponges were continuously identified by researchers, including Actinokineospora spheciospongiae (Kämpfer et al, 2015), Marmoricola aquaticus (de Menezes et al, 2015), Streptomyces spongiicola (Huang et al, 2016), Saccharopolyspora spongiae (Souza et al, 2017) and Williamsia spongiae (de Menezes et al, 2017), Streptomyces reniochalinae and Streptomyces diacarni (Li et al, 2018). Thus, marine sponges have proven to be a good habitat for novel actinomycete species (Abdelmohsen et al, 2014; Huang et al, 2016).…”

“…At the time of writing, 854 Streptomyces species with validly published names had been proposed according to List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature 1 . Some of these Streptomyces strains have been isolated from a wide range of marine habitats, including mangroves ( Yan et al, 2010 ), marine sediments ( Zhao et al, 2009 ), seawater ( Zhu et al, 2011 ), sponges ( Huang et al, 2016 ), algae ( Girão et al, 2019 ), and corals ( Alfredo et al, 2017 ). Streptomyces constitutes an important source of new natural products because its strains contain a large number of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) associated with the production of multiple secondary metabolites ( Hwang et al, 2014 ; Liu et al, 2018 ).…”
