Streptomyces sp. Strain MUSC 125 from Mangrove Soil in Malaysia with Anti-MRSA, Anti-Biofilm and Antioxidant Activities

Abstract: There is an urgent need to search for new antibiotics to counter the growing number of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, one of which is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Herein, we report a Streptomyces sp. strain MUSC 125 from mangrove soil in Malaysia which was identified using 16S rRNA phylogenetic and phenotypic analysis. The methanolic extract of strain MUSC 125 showed anti-MRSA, anti-biofilm and antioxidant activities. Strain MUSC 125 was further screened for the presence of seco… Show more

“…Comparison with previous studies using Nocardia and Streptosporangium against S. aureus and MRSA showed that MIC against S. aureus were 30 μg and MRSA 40 μg [ 29 ]. The inhibition zone results are similar to a previous study carried by Mangzira Kemung et al [ 42 ] where MUSC 125 towards MRSA ATCC 43300 showed the I.Z of 19 ± 0 mm, while the I.Z was 19.33 ± 0.58 mm against MRSA ATCC 33591.…”

“…Screenings on the bioactivity of secondary metabolites from mangrove-derived streptomycetes have been conducted. The findings revealed that bioactivities such as antibacterial, antifungal, anti-HIV, anticancer, and antioxidant had been demonstrated by these isolates [77,[93][94][95][96][97].…”

“…In another study, the methanolic extract of Streptomyces sp. strain MUSC 125 from mangrove soil inhibited the growth of S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300 and S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 33591 at MIC values of 12.5 and 25 mg/mL, respectively [30]. According to [31], the ethyl acetate extract of mangrove sediment-derived Streptomyces sp.…”

“…The total phenolic content of the ethyl acetate extract of mangrove-associated Streptomyces olivaceus (MSU3) contained 0.0421 mg GAE/g of dry weight of extract [36]. In addition, several studies showed a correlation between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content in the methanolic extract of different strains of mangrove-derived Streptomyces [30,37,38]. However, in some reports no flavonoids were detected in the methanolic extracts of mangrove Streptomyces [37,38].…”
