Strengthening the evidence base for health promotion

Abstract: This paper describes the evidence debate from the many players currently attempting to define best practices in health promotion. Expert opinions on the purpose of collecting evidence range from those who view evidence as a western notion of little use in the developing world to those who choose to focus on opportunities to demonstrate the effectiveness of health promotion. There is also much disagreement on what constitutes evidence. Some view evidence as strict outcomes of randomized clinical trials (RCT) an… Show more

“…16 Experimental evidence for NSPs in the form of a randomised-controlled trial, considered the highest level of evidence in the ranking scheme, has not been possible because of the logistical and ethical problems of randomly assigning NSP access to individual or groups of IDUs. 17 While the hegemony of the evidence-based medicine framework now extends into all areas of health, [18][19][20] there is increasing debate regarding its appropriateness for using these forms of evidence for assessing some public health interventions. 21,22 After two decades there is still no evidence that NSPs reduce the age of initiation, increase the frequency of injecting or prolong the duration of drug injecting careers.…”

“…A disponibilidade de tecnologia, o aumento da insegurança, a progressiva redução dos espaços livres dos centros urbanos, reduzem as oportunidades de lazer e de uma vida fisicamente ativa, favorecendo atividades sedentárias, tais como: assistir televisão, jogar videogames e utilizar computadores (1,2) . Este desenvolvimento tecnológico e a redução de atividade física que o acompanhou têm mobilizado a comunidade científica na procura de soluções para os graves problemas de saúde pública.…”

“…The JDC campaign has thus far been successful since awareness has been shown to increase. Although McQueen [19] discussed it could be premature to prioritize types of evidence in a linear hierarchy, the finding of this study could provide a practical reference for other Asian countries.…”
