Stratigraphic and Earth System approaches to defining the Anthropocene

Abstract: Stratigraphy provides insights into the evolution and dynamics of the Earth System over its long history. With recent developments in Earth System science, changes in Earth System dynamics can now be observed directly and projected into the near future. An integration of the two approaches provides powerful insights into the nature and significance of contemporary changes to Earth. From both perspectives, the Earth has been pushed out of the Holocene Epoch by human activities, with the mid-20th century a stron… Show more

“…We define the onset of anthropogenic activities at 1750 CE (or 200 BP), based on the timing of the increase in CO 2 and CH 4 in our final splines, although we acknowledge that the onset of the Anthropocene is still debated (e.g. Lewis and Maslin, 2015;Steffen et al, 2016;Williams et al, 2016). “…That general opinion began to change in the second half of the 20 th century, when the magnitude of human-driven geological change became more widely appreciated as of sufficient scale and persistence to be reflected using geologically-based terms such as the ʻAnthroceneʼ of Revkin (1992). This observation was crystallized within the Earth System science (ESS) community with the first utterance of ʻAnthropoceneʼ by Paul Crutzen, after which the term began to be widely used (see also Steffen et al 2016). Crutzen's proposal, though coming from an atmospheric chemist working within the ESS community, was nevertheless proposed overtly to represent "the present, in many ways human-dominated, geological epoch" .…”
