Stratified medicine for mental disorders

Abstract: There is recognition that biomedical research into the causes of mental disorders and their treatment needs to adopt new approaches to research. Novel biomedical techniques have advanced our understanding of how the brain develops and is shaped by behaviour and environment. This has led to the advent of stratified medicine, which translates advances in basic research by targeting aetiological mechanisms underlying mental disorder. The resulting increase in diagnostic precision and targeted treatments may provi… Show more

“…But it is hard to foresee an alternative to the traditional phenotype of manic-depressive illness that clinicians may be able to recognize and treat. It is much more likely, thus, that future translational research looking into concepts such as 'positive valence' or 'systems for social processes' may assist in better defining the bipolar phenotype allowing for a real 'personalized or stratified medicine' (18), rather than replacing it. The ROA-MER project (Roadmap for Mental Health Research in Europe) may provide guidance on how to implement the foundation for an alternative to the US radical shift in mental health research priorities represented by RDoC, at the European level.…”

“…Fortunately, a prioritization of future research needs is getting more and more attention not only from decision makers but also from research science [13,16]. Certainly, the discussion around the prioritization process should not be leaved to single groups of health care and quality researchers or decision makers, but rather should be guided by all means by research experts of the specific field from all over the world.…”
