The research aims to design economic empowerment model of santri in pesantren education. The study used Participatory Rural Appration method and purposive informant selection consisting of pesantren board, teacher, santri and community. Data ware collected through documentation analysis, direct observation, interviews, and Participatory Decision Making. The location of the study was determined at pesantren of Al-Muttaqin in Cirebon, West Java and Darusy Syahadah in Boyolali, Central Java. The study was analyzed by PRA through triangulation to find the diversity of difference and similarity as well as data verification. The results show (1) Pesantren has motivation and potency to make economic institution through empowerment activity of santri like horticulture cultivation, fish and goat farm, retail and also cooperation. (2) Empowerment activities, especially through education programs, can provide students with entrepreneurial skills, independence and welfare, create harmonization with the community and anticipate the negative stigma of exclusive, closed and radical of pesantren.

 Abstract: Islamic boarding school is one of the islamic educational institutions that grow fastly with diversity method in Indonesia This study is aimed to describe the effort to grow young entrepreneur at Islamic Boarding School al Ittifaq Ciwidey Bandung through agribusiness activity with a focus on student empowerment. The study was done at Al-Ittifaq Ciwidey Bandung by applying qualitative research approach. Informants were selected by means of purposive sampling and snowball sampling which were further classified into three groups (triangulation). Furthermore, data collection technic was conducted through in-depth interview, direct observation, documentation, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). Data analysis technic was performed using interactive model. Regarding the effort to grow young entrepreneurs, result of the study shows that student at al Ittifaq Ciwidey Bandung involve in agribusiness activities such as: (1) the formation of Executive Board of Agribusiness Unit, (2) conducting technical practices directly in the field, (3) establishing Agribusiness Incubation Center (PIA), (4) establishing cooperation/partnership with various institutions, and (5) setting up agribusiness groups of students.

Religion and Economy: How the Act of Rational Economy Dominates Muslim Entrepreneurs

This research aimed to explore the motives that encouraged Muslim entrepreneurs to make business decisions in running businesses, and also to examined the effects of their religions as well as the business logics they used toward their trading behaviors. The subjects of this research were the Muslim entrepreneurs running the business of apparel convection in Botoran, Tulungagung. This research used qualitative method with phenomenological approach. The data extracting technique was conducted by documentation, observation, and interviews. The results showed that Muslim traders based their business behaviors on the consideration of rational choices. Such behaviors were manifested in the forms of: choosing to partition their houses as the place of production (home factory); choosing to procure capital through the Chinese; choosing temporary sewing workers; choosing to replace the procurement of computer embroidery machines; dun-dunan rego (decreasing the costs); nembak (lighting); and reluctant to establish a cooperative to accommodate them. Meanwhile, religion, morals, and other values are not considered by them in running their business. The implication of the findings is that religious and economic motives always appeared in a person's business processes. The dominance of one of them was determined by the environment and experience. Sharia financial institutions in the vicinity, such as Sharia Banks and BMT (Baitul Mal wa Tamwil, a sharia-based microfinance institution or cooperative), as well as Islamic organizations, with the right kinship approach, were required to be present to pay attention to business development and community empowerment.
