Chinese initiatives of a geopolitical nature are being more and more frequently analyzed in the literature. At the same time, it is pointed out that at least since 2012 China has been pursuing an assertive and active foreign policy. Due to the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative project and also the 16 + 1 cooperation in the Central and Eastern Europe region, it is worth analyzing what the perception of China in this region is on the example of Poland. The study attempts to answer the question of how the increase in China's importance and its international engagement are perceived in Poland. The analysis of Polish papers published in 2003-2017 shows, and this is an argument, that Polish researchers more frequently present China in the categories of a threat and apply research terminology and tools within the realistic theory of international relations and this image is being reinforced, especially after 2013. The analytical framework of BChina as a threat^and BChina as an opportunity^occurring frequently in research is placed in this paper in theories of international relations.

The Genesis of the Maastricht Treaty and Its Importance for the European Integration and Security

The Treaty of Maastricht was signed thirty years ago, that is, on 7 February 1992, and after its ratification entered into force on 1 November 1993. It was a quantum leap into the European integration initiated after the Second World War. It constituted a basis for the creation of the European Union (EU), becoming an accelerator of the European integration and an important element of the transatlantic system of international security. Its origin and decisions rest in such contemporary events and processes as the “Autumn of Nations,” which resulted in the fall of communism in the states of Central and Eastern Europe, German reunification on 3 October 1990, the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991 and the global end of the Cold War. The article is aimed at analyzing the prerequisites of the genesis of the Treaty of Maastricht and showing its significance for the integration and security of Europe after the collapse of the Yalta-Potsdam order and the end of the Cold War. The main thesis statement is that the Treaty of Maastricht would not have been signed and the European Union would not have been established without the fall of communism in the states of Central and Eastern Europe, the collapse of the Soviet Union and German reunification. Moreover, I believe that international situation after the Cold War would have been less stable without the Treaty of Maastricht and the EU, because the competition for leadership between reunited Germany and France would have intensified.

REFORMS AND EVOLUTION OF THE EU’S COMMON SECURITY AND DEFENCE POLICY 2016-2023: Achievements and Failures The aim of the article is to analyze the reforms of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union, with particular emphasis on the new EU External Security Strategy adopted in 2016 and its evolution, achievements and failures in the years 2016-2023. In addition, the European Union’s position on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and its impact on the evolution and reforms of the CSDP and the necessary changes to the EU’s foreign policy and security strategy for Europe will be shown. The main thesis here is that the previous reforms of the European Union’s WSDiO have been defensive in nature and should be radically changed in view of the current international situation. Among other things, the EU’s soft power policy should be supplemented with hard power measures. The decision making process on matters relating to the EU’s foreign and security policy should also change, and in particular the use of the EU veto requires urgent reform. This will not be easy to achieve, but it is necessary for the European Union to be able to respond quickly and effectively to emerging threats to the security of its members and peace in Europe.
