Seed storage is carried out to secure the seed stock obtained from the harvest until they are planted. The appropriate techniques were used to maintain the seed viability during storage. The objective of the research is to evaluate the viability of malapari (Pongamia pinnata) seeds after being treated. The seeds are stored in a room in sealed plastic with no media, sealed plastic + coconut coir powder media, sealed plastic + husk charcoal. The other containers were calico fabric with no media, calico fabric + coconut coir powder media, and calico fabric + husk charcoal. The finding showed that the best storage was storing the seed in a plastic container plus husk charcoal media, and within five weeks, it can maintain the seed moisture content of 62.92%, germination percentage of 93.33%, and germination speed of 7.55% KN/et mal. The seed can also be stored in a plastic container without media at a moisture content of 60.69%, and a germination percentage of 91.00%.

Pepper (Piper nigrum L.) has many benefits, especially in its seeds, commonly used as a food flavoring. Pepper effectively increases appetite, increases the digestive glands' activity, and accelerates fatty substances' digestion. In general, pepper production per unit area in Indonesia is low. The average is below 1 ton of dry pepper per hectare. This low productivity is mainly due to inadequate cultivation techniques, such as improper fertilization and inadequate care. The development of pepper cultivation is still running slowly due to the many obstacles faced by farmers. This productivity could be increased if farmers could apply good and correct cultivation techniques. Generally, pepper cultivation in Indonesia uses standards. This technique is expensive and requires intensive maintenance. The pepper seeds commonly planted by farmers come from running shoots. The experimental design used was the split-plot design with shade netting as the first factor and the administration of husk charcoal as the second factor. Other factors observed were climatic factors, including temperature and relative humidity, bird bud burst time, sprouting time, and root-shoot ratio. The results indicated that the shade netting and husk charcoal treatment on the planting medium significantly affected bird bud burst time, sprouting time, and root-shoot ratio. This study aimed to investigate the effect of climate on the growth of pepper cuttings. The results indicated that the best bird bud burst time occurred in treatment n0 (100%), a0 (1:1) 34.67 days, and not significantly different from n0 (100%) a2 (0: 1) 35.00 days. The best sprouting time occurred in treatment n0 (100%) a2 (0: 1) 32.00 days, not significantly different from n0 (100%) a0 (1: 1) 32.50 days. The root-shoot ratio was significantly different in treatment n0 (100%) a1 (1; 0) 5.28 g.

The Uses of Cempaka Wood (Magnolia spp) by the Community in Rumoong Atas Village North Sulawesi, Indonesia and Its Environmental Impact

The uses of cempaka wood to satisfy the demand in constructing houses and household furniture is considered as environmental-friendly doings which can reinforce the efforts of preventing global warming. Cempaka is commonly used by the people in North Sulawesi. This study aims to discover the use of cempaka wood in Rumoong Atas Village, North Sulawesi and its environmental impact. The methods employed are descriptive method based on the interview results from the participants in Rumoong Atas Village and field surveys. The findings indicate that there are various usages of cempaka wood in the village. The villagers prefer cempaka woods because of hereditary uses and the level of cultural historical attachment, excellent timber quality and texture, and the availability. These diverse functions contain implications for abundant existence of cempaka plants around Rumoong Atas Village. The survival of cempaka plants must be maintained and developed continuously because of their varied functions in Rumoong Atas area. The enhancement of these plants by the public of Rumoong Atas is expected to preserve the existence of natural forests in North Sulawesi which have been declining in both quality and quantity and deliver significant influence towards additional width of critical areas.
