It is widely known that asphalts yielding similar re:;ults in standard tests like penetration may in fact exhibit significantly difEerent performance with respect to product manufacturing, application, or durability.Thus, a need exists for more definitive testing, especially with respect to defining the chemical composition of asphalt. Direct spectroscopic analysis of asphalt is diEEicult because of its compositional complexity, high degree of association between compounds present, and high. overall average molecular weight/boiling range.Hence, prior liquid chromatographic separation into compound classes or types can greatly enhance the level of information obtainable from spectroscopic methods, as well as provide information on types and quantities of compounds present. Details of the scheme, example applications, and results from analysis of fractions are discussed.

Color Degradation of Hydrocracked Diesel Fuel

A combination of two first-order reactions that had different rate constants was found to describe the rate of color development in the 288-343 °C diesel fraction from hydrocracked Llyodminster atmospheric bottoms. These two reactions were the conversion of color precursors which were either (a) unsaturated compounds or (b) heteroatom compounds. The color precursors were correlated with the composition of the diesel fraction. The heteroatom color precursors were correlated with the combination of sulfur and nitrogen content of the diesel fraction. The unsaturated color precursors were correlated with its density, since density can be related to the aromatic content. The rate constants were related to catalyst composition. The fact that all of the parameters in the correlation were related to physical phenomena supported the hypothesis that color development is related to these two types of color precursors. The hydrocracking conditions were 17.3 MPa, 415 °C, 0.59 LHSV, and 570 L (H 2 at STP)/L of feed [2400 scf/bbl]. Eleven different hydrocracking catalysts were examined, most of which contained two components, a conventional CoMo:γAl 2 O 3 component and a zeolite component (sodalite containing nickel, SOD-Ni). The same two rate expressions were found to describe the results obtained from all of the catalysts. The conversion of the heteroatom compounds that were color precursors was associated with the CoMo:γAl 2 O 3 component of the catalyst component. The conversion of the unsaturated compounds that were color precursors was associated with the SOD-Ni catalyst component.

As part of a world-wide survey of middle distillate fuel instability, three fuels were chosen for detailed GCIMS analysis. These fuels are identified by number and country of origin; FL-2577 was from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada; FL-2599 was from Abamadj, Kuwait; and FL 2592 was from Chiba, Japan. The organonitrogen compounds in the three fuels were separated by mild acid extraction followed by silica gel absorption. This treatment yielded three fractions for each fuel; a basic nitrogen compounds fraction, BNC; a non-basic nitrogen compounds fraction in methylene chloride, mcl, NBNC-mcl; and a non-basic nitrogen compounds fraction in methanol, meoh, NBNC-meoh. The three fractions from each fuel were analyzed by combined capillary gclms. The organo-nitrogen compounds from each fraction were identified and quantitated.
