Stone-clod Separation and Its Application to Potato Cultivation in Hokkaido

Abstract: However, direct contact of stones and clods with potatoes in the harvester causes considerable damage to potato tubers during mechanical harvesting (Yamada, 2007).Consequently, a soil mechanical conditioning (SMC) technique that removes the stones and clods from beds before sowing potato crops has been adopted in Hokkaido. This technique removes the stones and clods from the sowing beds, greatly decreasing the quantity of unwanted material lifted into the machine during harvesting. The result is a reduced

“…Following rice, wheat and corn, potatoes (Solanum tuberosum Linnaeus) are one of the world's main crops in terms of calories, and play a dominant role in the world food production (Ichiki et al 2013). According to the annual report of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the total potato production in 2016 was 375 million t for the world, and Iran's contribution was about 5.2 million t over 162 thousand ha (FAOSTAT 2016).…”

“…Some experimental studies of this process are briefly discussed in monographs [4,5]. In works [6][7][8][9] the general questions of the mechanized harvesting of root crops are covered, the designs of digging working bodies, results of theoretical and experimental researches of processes of digging of root crops are resulted.…”

“…The narrowest link in the mechanized technologies of potato production remains his harvesting (Petrov, 2004). In this regards, theoretical and experimental studies, as well as numerous tests of various types of potato harvesting machines, have established that high-quality cleaning of potato tubers from clod and plant impurities is possible when a significant mass of soil and other components of the pile (remains of tops, roots, strong soil formations, stones and others) is immediately separated from the tubers within the process of dig of the potato or immediately after its lifted so that a large mass of heap do not move along with the tubers inside the machine (Keijbets, 2008;Ichiki et al, 2013;Manetto et al, 2017).…”
