“…Besides regulating the mineralization process of nacre, water-soluble matrix (WSM) contributes to its biological activities [3,4]. These WSM molecules are evidently involved in cell recruitment, differentiation and stimulation to produce mineralized tissues [5,6]. Due to beneficial biological activities, nacre finds uses in several traditional pharmaceutical preparations, by stimulating bone growth and enhancing bone density.…”

“…Other subsequent experiments have tested nacre’s osteogenic power in few laboratory animals, such as sheep and have reported similar dramatic osteostimulatory effects [163]. In 12 weeks a defect excavated in the lumbar vertebra and filled with nacre powder transformed into spongy bone while the nacre was seen to have dissolved [163]. In comprehending these results we cannot rule out some osteogenic effect from the nacre surface structure itself such as the micro- and nanotopography.…”

“…There was no inflammation and fresh bone had been generated as the nacre resorbed. “…Pearl oyster nacre is able to induce osteogenesis and bone formation from latent osteoprogenitors along an endochondral pathway, consisting of a cartilage tissue intermediary phase (Lamghari et al, 2001a; 2001b; Lopez et al, 1992; 2004a; 2004b; Milet et al, 2004; Shen et al, 2006; Silve et al, 1992). Nacre has been tested in human, sheep and rabbit models (Lamghari et al, 1999; 2001b; Liao et al, 2002). In human patients with critical size, non-union bone defects, fresh woven bone welded itself throughout the nacre implant with participation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts.…”
