Stigmas, symptom severity and perceived social support predict quality of life for PLHIV in urban Indian context

Abstract: BackgroundMultiple variables have been studied in relation to health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but research has not integrated the contributions of different variables in a single model that allows to compare them. This study, carried out with people living with HIV/AIDS in India, sought to develop a prediction model considering various predictors previously found to be related to HRQoL, namely sociodemographic factors, HIV symptoms, social support, stigmas and avoidant coping.MethodsA sample of 961 HIV… Show more

“…Consistent with the previous studies,65,66 each domain of the stigma scale was significantly correlated with each domain of QOL in PLWHA, and the mean score of QOL domains was negatively correlated with the mean score of stigma domains. This suggests that the HIV-related stigma has a major influence on all QOL domains in PLWHA.…”

“…Under this rationale, particular caution is warranted for PLHIV with low CD4 cell count, advanced disease, high viral load, and those not taking antiretroviral treatment (ART). As PLHIV are living longer with ART, many will also have chronic conditions associated with severe COVID-19 disease [7]. However, there have not been large observational studies specifically measuring symptoms, disease severity, complications, multimorbidity, and the proportion of death in reported COVID-19-HIV co-infected patients.…”

“…Hence, people living with HIV (PLHIV) have longer life spans, which create new challenges for health care systems. [4] A PLHIV has to cope up with a range of HIV-related symptoms for their entire life. Symptoms may be related to the infection itself, comorbid illnesses, or iatrogenic effects from HIV-related medications.…”
