“…In two recent articles to this journal Evans and Napper (7,8) have asserted that the theories proposed by Meier (5), and by Hesselink, Vrij and Overbeek (6) are incorrect in that they distinguish two separate, additive contributions to the steric interactions; (a), the so-called "volume restriction term", associated with the reduction in the total number of conformations available to the adsorbed polymer on the approach of a second particle; (b), the so-called "free energy of mixing (or osmotic) term", associated with changes in the mixing of polymer segmentssolvent molecules as the particles approach. Evans and Napper (7,8) claim that effect (b) in fact incorporates effect (a). Whilst we believe there are a number of fundamental errors in the Meier (5) and Hesselink et al (6).…”
