Objectives: Corpus callosum (CC) is the largest commissural pathway that connects cerebral hemispheres. Structural changes have been reported in epilepsy. Therefore, in this study, the relationship between CC structure and blood parameters was evaluated in patients with epilepsy treated with monotherapy. Methods: In this study, 50 primary epilepsy patients treated with monotherapy and 40 healthy controls were included. Age, sex, antiepileptic drugs, duration of disease, type and frequency of seizures were questioned. Genu, truncus, splenium and anterior-posterior diameter of CC were measured in the TSE/T1 sagittal sequence of brain magnetic resonance imaging. The relationship between blood parameters, antiepileptic treatment and disease characteristics were evaluated. Results: Fifty patients (26 females, 24 males) were included in this study. The mean age was 34.46±13.02 years. Morphometric measurements of CC were genu was 11.12±1.69, truncus was 6.09±1.17, splenium was 10.39±1.93 and anterior-posterior was 69.08±5.19 millimeter (mm). Anterior-posterior diameter was smaller in patients with epilepsy (p=0.04). Female patients with epilepsy had smaller genu diameter (p=0.01). Splenium diameter was smaller in patients with longer disease duration (p=0.04). There was no difference between antiepileptic drug use and morphometric measurements (p>0.05). Urea and creatinine levels were higher in patients with epilepsy (p=0.00, 0.00). Vitamin D and ferritin levels were lower (p=0.01, 0.01). There was no correlation between blood values and morphometric measurements (p>0.05, r<0.25). Conclusion:Anterior-posterior diameter of CC is smaller in epilepsy. Especially in female patients, genu diameter is smaller. Splenium diameter is smaller in patients with a long duration of epilepsy. There is no correlation between blood parameters and CC diameters.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on corpus callosum (CC) morphometry in patients with TLE.Methods:This retrospective study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Tekirdag Namik Kemal University, Tekirdag, Turkey between November 2010 and December 2013. The epileptic syndrome diagnosis was based on International League Against Epilepsy criteria, and this study was conducted on the MRIs of 25 epilepsy patients and 25 control subjects. We classified the patients according to their duration of epilepsy <10 and ≥10 years. The projection area length (PAL) of the CC was also estimated. Total brain volumes (TBV) were measured on CT images.Results:The mean values of TBV for patients with TLE and the control group were not statistically different, but the CC PAL values were statistically different. The mean CC PAL values of under and over 25 years of age in patients with TLE were statistically different. The mean values of TBV of under and over 10 years duration of TLE were small statistically, but the CC PAL values were statistically different.Conclusion:The results indicate a clear influence of TLE on the structure of the CC rather than TBV.

Introduction Recently, scientists who performed morphological, comparative and experimental studies have tried to get more efficient and accurate information from the interested tissue. The volume estimation is part of this information and an important criterion for the biomedical sciences. It increases the confidence in the data obtained. The volumetric change is an indicator of an organ's health status. It is also important in the clinical diagnosis of a tumour, therapy planning and control of the tumour's growth. The important data obtained using the Cavalieri principle is considered the best volume estimation method. This method, a stereological tool, allows precise estimates about the related object. Scientists and clinicians both use this method under in vivo and in vitro conditions. The method could combine in vivo by computed tomography and magnetic resonance images and in vitro after the classical histological tissue processing. The aim of this article was to discuss the recent developments and the importance of the volume estimation in biomedical sciences. Methodology The Cavalieri principle could estimate an object's volume under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In vitro estimations-First, the tissue is sliced at a random starting point at parallel and equal intervals. Then, the surface areas of these slices (just one and the same side of each slice) are measured by a randomly superposed point grid. The point counting procedure could be done on a computer loaded with stereology software. In vivo estimations-This measurement is done on magnetic resonance and computed tomography images. The parallel and equally sliced images of the related objects are obtained from the magnetic resonance and computed tomography. At the monitor, the software places the point grid on these images and the estimations are calculated. Conclusion The Cavalieri principle estimates the total volume of an organ and its subcomponents more accurately and precisely than the other methods. It runs simply and easily and produces efficient results.
