Stereochemical Studies on Ovatoxin‐a

Abstract: Ovatoxin-a is the main toxin produced by Ostreopsis ovata, a benthic dinoflagellate that has bloomed massively across the Mediterranean basin over the past years, inflicting both human and environmental suffering. Ovatoxin-a has recently been isolated from cultures of O. ovata and structurally identified as an analogue of palytoxin: in comparison with palytoxin, ovatoxin-a lacks three hydroxy groups at the 17-, 44- and 64-positions, but features an extra hydroxy functionality at the 42-position. Herein we repo… Show more

“…In order to assess the specific growth parameters of this dinoflagellate, we set up a preliminary growth curve starting with an inoculation of 80 cells mL −1 . Net exponential growth rate (μ t −1 ) was calculated as the slope of a regression line of ln (N) versus time (t −1 ), where N was the [20,21] and ovatoxin-a (OVTX-a) [22,36] as determined by NMR studies. Cleavages #14, #20, #28, and #6+12 occur only in PLTX [19].…”

“…In this sense, many times the results are shown as PLTX-like compounds because although several analogs have been identified, as far as we know, certified material or standards for these products are not yet available. Therefore the identification studies published are based on theoretical chemical approaches from a PLTX standard [5,[7][8][9][10]18].…”

“…The PLTX-group of toxins includes complex polyhydroxylated compounds with a lipophilic and a hydrophilic area. Different molecules related with the PLYX structure ( Figure 1) have been described: palytoxin-b, homopalytoxin, bishomopalytoxin, neopalytoxin, deoxypalytoxin, 42-hydroxypalytoxin, ostreocin-d, ovatoxin-a, -b,-c,-d, -e and -f and mascarenotoxin-a, -b and -c. However only the chemical structures of PLTX, ostreocin-d, ovatoxin-a and 42-hydroxypalytoxin have been characterized [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. PLTX is a large molecule, with a molecular weight of 2659-2680 daltons depending on the origin [12,13].…”
