Stem cell homing in periodontal tissue regeneration

Abstract: The destruction of periodontal tissue is a crucial problem faced by oral diseases, such as periodontitis and tooth avulsion. However, regenerating periodontal tissue is a huge clinical challenge because of the structural complexity and the poor self-healing capability of periodontal tissue. Tissue engineering has led to advances in periodontal regeneration, however, the source of exogenous seed cells is still a major obstacle. With the improvement of in situ tissue engineering and the exploration of stem cell … Show more

“…As we have shown these cells have a high degree of multi-potency and self-renewal capabilities, can be cultured and maintained in feeder-free adhesion conditions as monolayer cells, and also be able to grow in the suspension condition in the form of neurospheres. Taken together our results describes a readily accessible source of multipotent oNCSCs for autologous tissue engineer and cell-based therapeutic research supported by newest publications in the field (Meng et al 2022) [21]. Culture-expanded neural stem cells (NCSCs) are used in current clinical trials, but these interventions are associated with significant costs and concerns about culture-related loss of efficacy (Figure 6).…”

“…Periimplant bone seemed to be less mature. Nevertheless oral-derived neural crest-derived stem cells of the in vivo milieu can be modified to promote the native regenerative process and inspire future tissue-engineering design [21,22].…”

“…68 Cell homing therapy would remove today's need for exogenous seed cells by utilizing the patient's own stem cells with cytokines and chemokines serving as stimuli for the implanted tissue-engineered scaffolds. 69 Probiotics are also being considered for their use in the management of periodontal disease. The theory for the strategy was previously described in the caries discussion.…”

“…For example, deoxyprostaglandin nanoparticles were found to be anti-inflammatory and improve regeneration by Jiang et al [ 7 ]. Cytokines such as BMP-2, FGF, VEGF, and TGF-β were normally added in periodontal regeneration with positive results, and the combination of cytokines and other bioactive extracts with dECM materials achieved a greater outcome in both bone tissue engineering and periodontium regeneration [ 57 , 58 , 59 , 61 , 62 ].…”
