Stem Bark of Canarium odontophyllum Miq. (Dabai) as Potential Source of Antimicrobial Agent

Abstract: and Fusarium solani M2781. The extracts from C. odontophyllum stem bark from 3.125 mg/ml to 25 mg/ml were screened against the tested microorganisms using disc diffusion method. The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the extracts against susceptible organisms were determined using microbroth dilution method and streak-plate technique, respectively. From the antibacterial screening assay, the growth of S. aureus, B. cereus and A. baumannii were inhibited by me… Show more

“…From the MTT assay, acetone extract showed a higher cytotoxic effect compared with methanol extract whereas aqueous extract was not cytotoxic at 24 h of treatment. In the previous study, the same pattern of data was seen by all three extracts but at much higher IC 50 values [ 10 ]. This may be because of the difference in the range of concentration used.…”

“…It is said that plant-derived polyphenolic compounds act as antitumor compounds and have apoptosis-inducing properties in cancer cells [ 31 ]. Based on the previous study [ 10 ], acetone extract from stem bark of C. odontophyllum was found to have phenolic compounds and other phytochemicals such as saponin, terpenoid and tannin. A study found that acetone extract from stem bark of Cephaltaxus griffithii Hook f. induced apoptosis towards HeLa cells [ 32 ].…”

“…Dabai fruit is recognized as Sibu olive because of its similar appearance, flavor, and texture with olive [ 1 ]. Interestingly, the dabai fruit fractions (pulp and seed) possess various biological activities such as antimicrobial (seed) [ 2 ], anti-fungal (pulp) [ 3 ], anti-Alzheimer’s (pulp and seed) [ 4 ], and anti-hyperglycemic (pulp) [ 5 ]. Phytochemicals identified from dabai fruit (pulp with peel), were phenolic acids (ellagic, vanillic acids, ethyl gallate), flavonoids (catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate, apigenin), anthocyanins (malvidin-3,5-di- O -glucoside, cyanidin-3- O -glucoside, cyanidin-3- O -rutinoside and peonidin-3- O -glucoside), and anthocyanidins (cyanidin, pelargonidin and delphinidin) [ 6 ].…”

“…The leaves from C. odontophyllum were found to have antimicrobial activity [8]. Recently, the acetone bark extract from C. odontophyllum was also reported to demonstrate bactericidal effect against S. aureus ATCC 25923 from minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays [9]. The present study, therefore, aims to investigate the antimicrobial activity of C. odontophyllum acetone stem bark extract against the resistant strain of S. aureus, namely MRSA Mu50 strain using time-kill assay (TKA) and post-antibiotic effect (PAE) assessments.…”
