Status of Thyroid Disorder among the Thyroid Function Test Samples Received in a Laboratory among Postmenopausal Women: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study

Abstract: Introduction: Thyroid dysfunction prevalence is high in females worldwide which increases with age. Postmenopausal and elderly women are particularly at risk of developing comorbidities and mortality related to thyroid dysfunction. We aimed to study the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in postmenopausal women in the National Reference Laboratory of Nepal. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in National Reference Laboratory from January 2019 to June 2019 including postmenopausal fe… Show more

“…The interpretation of the functional outcome of the thyroid should be made with caution during the premenopausal and postmenopausal periods [10][11][12]. Some studies only tested thyroid function disorder and did not correlate it with menopausal symptoms and some only tested women who are postmenopausal, whereas other studies compared pre-and postmenopausal results [13][14][15][16]. In addition, research shows that the prevalence of thyroid disorders is more with advancing age [13][14][15].…”

“…This information plays a crucial role in determining the patient's prognosis and guiding the selection of appropriate targeted therapies. The integration of imaging and molecular diagnostics is a prime illustration of the comprehensive approach inherent in precision medicine within the field of thyroidology [ 19 ]. This approach facilitates a thorough evaluation of thyroid problems, considering both the structural and molecular components, to develop a customized and accurate treatment strategy.…”
