Status of the Trasco Intense Proton Source and emittance measurements

Abstract: The Trasco Intense Proton Source ͑TRIPS͒ was installed at INFN-LNS in May 2000 and has been fully operational since the Fall of 2000; now the source fulfills all the requirements of the TRASCO ͑Trasmutazione Scorie͒ project. The proton beam intensity easily exceeds 40 mA at the operating voltage of 80 kV. A set of emittance measurements was carried out for different source conditions and confirmed the simulations performed with the AXCEL code: in all the cases the rms normalized emittance is well lower than th… Show more

“…2.45 GHz ECR discharges similar to TIPS are widely used as high-current light ion sources, in particular, for proton beam production. [17][18][19][20][21] In such application, the properties of the plasma have a strong effect on the quality of the extracted ion beam, which is typically characterized by the transverse emittance () of the beam, which must be matched with the acceptance of the subsequent accelerator in ðx; x 0 Þ; ðy; y 0 Þ phase space. The quality of an ion beam is defined in terms of current and emittance.…”

“…τ i can be modified in many ways, for example by modifying the magnetic field or the dimension of the plasma chamber. Since the VIS magnetic field is generated by permanent magnets [11], modifying the magnetic field required shifting the magnetic assembly along the plasma chamber. These are further investigated in Section 3.2.…”

“…This source, originally designed for the TRASCO/ADS project, satisfies the requirements either in terms of proton current (more than 40 mA from a 6 mm hole, above 60 mA from an 8 mm hole) at 80 kV and in terms of ε rms ≤ 0.2π mm mrad. Its measured reliability over 1 week exceed, 99% [4,5].…”
