Status of Platelet Collection and Platelet Transfusion

Abstract: Platelet product derived from single donor plateletpheresis is required to reduce the risks of adverse reactions by blood transfusion. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the status of platelet collection and its efficacy by various kinds of plateletpheresis equipment and to assess the achievement of platelet transfusion by platelet product derived from a single donor. Since the blood centers have introduced some kinds of efficient plateletpheresis equipment, large units of platelet products have been… Show more

“…In Japan, PLT concentrate (PC) is manufactured and supplied by the Japanese Red Cross Blood Center. Approximately 90 percent of the supplied PCs are collected from single donors by apheresis 2,3 . Following collection, the storage period is limited to 72 hours in Japan 4 compared to 5 days in many Western countries 1 .…”

“…With a lifespan of 120 days for RBCs or 9–10 days for platelets, an adult human must maintain a baseline daily production rate of ∼1% for RBCs and 10% for platelets under steady-state conditions. 32 These levels of production can be increased greatly under conditions of increased demand (i.e., stress), such as acute trauma or blood loss. 33 , 34 To evaluate if transgene-derived IDUA expression and release can be further enhanced after stress, we performed large-volume (350- to 400-μL) bleeding on 2 consecutive days, followed by small-volume blood sampling in a subset of animals from each dose group and controls ( Figure S2 A).…”
