a b s t r a c tIon tracks were generated in crystalline San Carlos olivine (Mg,Fe) 2 SiO 4 and Durango apatite Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 F 2 using different heavy ions ( 58 Ni, 101 Ru, 129 Xe, 197 Au, and 238 U) with energies ranging between 185 MeV and 2.6 GeV. The tracks and their annealing behavior were studied by means of synchrotron based small angle X-ray scattering in combination with in situ annealing. Track radii vary as a function of electronic energy loss but are very similar in both minerals. Furthermore, the annealing behavior of the track radii has been investigated and preliminary results reveal a lower recovery rate of the damaged area in olivine compared with apatite.

Different types of polycarbonate foils were irradiated with 1.4 GeV Xe ions, ultra-violet (UV) treated and subsequently etched, creating cylindrical pores of high aspect ratio. The pores are perfectly well aligned and represent excellent objects for small-angle X-ray scattering. Two-dimensional scattering spectra exhibit highly anisotropic patterns with clear presentation of numerous oscillations of the Bessel function, the radial part of the scattering function. Modelling the pores as parallel cylinders allows us to deduce the pore radius and the radius dispersion as a function of UV treatment, etching time and fluence. It is demonstrated that the UV treatment has a beneficial influence on the poresize distribution, in particular for small pores.

An automated procedure for evaluation of colony-forming ability experiments has been developed using normal and xeroderma pigmentosum fibroblast strains. Technically this consists of an image analyzer equipped with a contrast-intensifying video camera, monitor, and a desk-top computer. Complex structures composed of overlapping colonies could be reduced to the constituent single colonies by special correction programs. Eighteen experiments were evaluated, and the Do values for colony-forming ability were determined.A systematic but correctable deviation between visual and automated counting was found. The source of this deviation is described and a solution for correction is provided. The automatic procedure reduced the evaluating time by a factor of five to ten.
