Statistical Piezotronic Effect in Nanocrystal Bulk by Anisotropic Geometry Control

Abstract: Utilizing inner‐crystal piezoelectric polarization charges to control carrier transport across a metal‐semiconductor or semiconductor–semiconductor interface, piezotronic effect has great potential applications in smart micro/nano‐electromechanical system (MEMS/NEMS), human‐machine interfacing, and nanorobotics. However, current research on piezotronics has mainly focused on systems with only one or rather limited interfaces. Here, the statistical piezotronic effect is reported in ZnO bulk composited of nanopl… Show more

“…This is the reason for the anisotropic behavior at higher voltages and currents. However, there are still small differences between the materials in different directions from a microscopic point of view . Such differences can be distinguished by amplification under weak currents and therefore exhibit anisotropy.…”

“…Due to the unique low-dimensional structure, quantum confinement effect changes its two-dimensional wave function, resulting in interesting and peculiar electronic and thermal transport properties. 53 Also, the low-dimensional heterojunction structure has a great tuning effect on the electronic structure of the material. It is significant to analyze the gas-sensitive anisotropy of the material at weak currents and the anisotropic isotropy at high currents.…”

“…This phenomenon is beneficial for the structural design of ultrahigh sensitive piezotronic devices based on piezotronic PN junctions. Recently, more and more attentions have been paid to the polycrystalline piezotronic ceramics [39][40][41], in which whether the interface barriers formed between adjacent nanocrystals increase, decrease or remain unmodified depends on the orientation of piezoelectric nanocrystals. Two typical simplified configurations, head-to-head and head-to-tail, are shown in Fig.…”

“…These characteristics aren't currently present in current technologies, which gives adaptive electronics and optoelectronics a lot of flexibility and potential for applications in optical nano electro mechanical systems and human-machine interfaces. Solar cells based on p-type polymers and sputtered ZnO films and are also being studied for piezophototronic coupling [23,24,[93][94][95].…”
