The egg parameters of Yoruba Ecotype Chicken (YEC), Sussex (SS) and their cross-bred chickens in the humid tropical region of Nigeria were assessed using principal component analysis. The study used 223 eggs, of which 124 YEC and 99 Sussex eggs were collected. Weekly data on the internal and external egg qualities of the hens were gathered using a vernier caliper, measuring tape and digital scale balance. The data acquired by dimension reduction with factor analysis were subjected to principal component analysis and the SPSS statistical package version 21 was also used to correlate the parameters pertaining to egg qualities. The strains' positive correlation with the traits related to egg quality indicated that PC 1 accounted for the largest portion of the overall variation in the characteristics of eggs. In YEC × YEC, 3PCs with high positive loading for egg width, egg number, egg length and shell thickness best described the characteristics of the egg quality. The characteristics of external quality (egg weight, egg width, shell thickness and shell weight) best characterized strain SS × SS. Comparably, strain SS × YEC was characterized by its external traits, whereas strain YEC × SS was characterized by its internal and external traits related to egg quality. It is concluded from this study that crossbreeding of YEC and SS can introduce variation, leading to a mix of internal and external quality characteristics of eggs. This information can be valuable for breeders who can select breeding pairs based on desired egg quality traits.

Path analysis procedure is a statistical procedure that can be applied to evaluate direct and indirect contributions of independent variables to the dependent variables for better understanding of the relationships between egg quality traits. One hundred and twenty (120) eggs, collected from Shika Brown layers, were used to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of internal and external egg quality parameters on egg weight of Shika Brown layers using Path analysis procedure. Data obtained on individual egg include the following; egg weight (EWT), egg length (ELT), egg width (EWD), shell thickness (STK), shell weight (SWT), albumen weight (AWT) and yolk weight (YWT). Correlation coefficient results show that EWT had a positively significant correlation (P<0.05) with ELT (0.715), EWD (0.758), SWT (0.460) and AWT (0.785). ELT had the greatest direct effect (0.360; P<0.05) on EWT followed by EWD (0.345; P<0.05) while the least of the direct effects on EWT (0.012; P<0.05) was from STK. However, the highest total indirect effect (0.487) on EGW was realised largely via EWD. Therefore, EWT of Shika Brown layer strain had a high positive relationship with ELT, EWD and AWT. The path coefficient analysis revealed that ELT, along with EWD contributed highest direct effect on the EWT. This information could be used in selection programme for the improvement of EWT of Shika Brown layer chickens.

Egg quality traits in quail breeders depend on various factors which may influence embryo survival during incubation, affecting the chicks' production and quality. The current study aimed to determine the effect of the laying period on the external and internal quality of the egg, the chemical composition of albumen, yolk, and eggshell as well as the reproductive parameters of quail breeders. A total of 450 quails (Coturnix japonica) obtained from the same hatchery, were reared in a battery cage with a sex ratio of 1 male to 3 females. All the quails were subjected to standard breeding conditions and fed a balanced laying diet. A total of 960 eggs were collected at two different periods of the laying cycle, the beginning period of the laying (BP indicating 10 weeks of quail age) and the peak period of laying (PP showing 20 weeks of quail age). At each laying period, 30 eggs were used to analyze the various parameters of egg quality, and 450 eggs were randomly selected to assess the reproductive performances. Overall, no differences in the external quality of eggs, such as egg length, egg width, and the egg shape index, were recorded between the two laying periods. Apart from albumen weight that tended to be higher at the peak laying period, the shell and the yolk weights were not affected by the period of laying. Additionally, Japanese quail tend to deposit similar proportions of shell, albumen, and yolk at the two periods of laying. Likewise, the rate of dry matter of the three egg components, shell mineral concentrations, and yolk fat concentrations did not show any noticeable variation with the laying period. The most significant effect of the laying period was related to the potential reduction in the total protein content of the albumen and the yolk of eggs laid at the peak period of laying. Finally, the laying period did not significantly affect the fertility and hatchability rate of the incubated quail eggs but slightly improved the embryonic mortality rate during the peak laying phase.
