Introduction:In recent years, the use of ceramic base zirconia is considered in dentistry for all ceramic restorations because of its chemical stability, biocompatibility, and good compressive as well as flexural strength. However, due to its chemical stability, there is a challenge with dental bonding. Several studies have been done to improve zirconia bonding but they are not reliable. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of plasma treatment on bonding strength of zirconia. Methods: In this in vitro study, 180 zirconia discs' (thickness was 0.85-0.9 mm) surfaces were processed with plasma of oxygen, argon, air and oxygen-argon combination with 90-10 and 80-20 ratio (n=30 for each group) after being polished by sandblast. Surface modifications were assessed by measuring the contact angle, surface roughness, and topographical evaluations. Cylindrical Panavia f2 resin-cement and Diafill were used for microshear strength bond measurements. The data analysis was performed by SPSS 20.0 software and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test as the post hoc. Results: Plasma treatment in all groups significantly reduces contact angle compare with control (P = 0.001). Topographic evaluations revealed coarseness promotion occurred in all plasma treated groups which was significant when compared to control (P < 0.05), except argon plasma treated group that significantly decreased surface roughness (P < 0.05). In all treated groups, microshear bond strength increased, except oxygen treated plasma group which decreased this strength. Air and argon-oxygen combination (both groups) significantly increased microshear bond strength (P < 0.05). Conclusion: According to this research, plasmatic processing with dielectric barrier method in atmospheric pressure can increase zirconia bonding strength.

A new potential application of nanotechnology for mineral scale prevention in the oil and gas industry is presented. In current squeeze treatments, in which scale inhibitors are squeezed into wells to adsorb or precipitate onto rock surfaces for later release, a large proportion of the injected inhibitor does not adsorb and is therefore returned very quickly from the reservoir upon well re-start. Here it is demonstrated that nano-particles have the potential to enhance squeeze lifetime by greatly increasing the adsorption of inhibitors within the formation. An extensive literature review is presented, exploring the potential for using nano-scale materials in squeeze treatments. One of the observations from scale inhibitor squeezes into sandstone reservoirs is the apparent lack of suitable surfaces available for adsorption. The main constituent of sandstones, quartz, has a very low ability to adsorb inhibitor (1 mg/I). Given this, research using nanotechnology was targeted towards enhancing the available sites for scale inhibitor adsorption within the near wellbore. Specifically, research was undertaken to examine the potential benefits of using carbon nanotubes in a process called Nanotechnology Assisted Squeeze Treatment (NAST). The process involves carbon nanotubes adsorbing and permanently modifying the near wellbore with scale inhibitors subsequently adsorbing onto the nanotubes. This process was observed to be significantly higher than a non-modified near wellbore surface, with a maximum adsorption of more than 85 and 160mg/g onto the nanotubes in solution of distilled water (DW) and CaC12 in DW; respectively, compared to 1 mg/g directly onto the rock. Coreflood tests comparing the NAST procedure with a simplified standard coreflood show the potential for improvement of the squeeze lifetime. IntroductionInorganic scale precipitation, including formation of CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , FeCO 3 , BaSO 4 , CaSO 4 , SrSO 4 , etc. occurs when two incompatible brines are mixed or where the conditions (i.e. temperature and pressure) in a system are changed and there is a resulting change in the solubility of certain salts. This can cause blockage of the oil path and damage to the production system. A chemical squeeze treatment is used to pump scale inhibitor (SI) downhole to adsorb or precipitate onto the formation rock. The aim is to establish a downhole reserve of SI from which subsequent desorption or release maintains a concentration of SI within the reservoir sufficient to prevent scale formation. The lifetime of the squeeze treatment is defined as the time when the return Scale Inhibitor (SI) concentration falls below the Minimum Inhibitor Concentration (MIC), which is typically 1-20 ppm depending on the reservoir conditions and SI properties. This thesis explores fabrication methods and characterization of novel materials used in field effect transistors, including metallic nanowires, carbon nanotubes, and graphene.Networks of conductive nanotubes are promising candidates for thin film electrode alternatives due to their desirable transparency, flexibility, and potential for large-scale processing. Silver nanowire and carbon nanotube networks are evaluated for their use as thin film electrode alternatives. Growth of silver nanowires in porous alumina membranes, dispersion onto a variety of substrates, and patterning is described. Metallic carbon nanotubes are suspended in aqueous solutions, airbrushed onto substrates, and patterned. The conductivity and transparency of both networks is evaluated against industry standards.Graphene is a two dimensional gapless semimetal that demonstrates outstanding room temperature mobilities, optical transparency, mechanical strength, and sustains large current densities, all desirable properties for semiconductors used in field effect transistors. Graphene's low on/off ratio and low throughput fabrication techniques have yet to be overcome before it becomes commercially viable.Silicon oxide substrates are common dielectrics in field effect transistors and instrumental in locating mechanically exfoliated graphene. The morphology of two different silicon oxides have been studied statistically with atomic force microscopy and scaling analysis. Tailoring the physical properties of these substrates may provide a control of graphene's electrical properties.A silicon oxide substrate may also be chemically altered to control the properties of graphene. I have modified silicon oxide with self-assembled monolayers with various terminal groups to control the field near the graphene. I characterize the monolayers with atomic force microscopy, x-ray photospectroscopy, and contact angles. I characterize graphene on these substrates using Raman microscopy and transport measurements.Finally, I examine low frequency noise in graphene field effect transistors on conventional silicon oxide substrates. As devices become smaller, the signal to noise ratio of these devices becomes important. Low frequency noise occurs on long time scales and must be controlled for device stability. I measure novel behavior of low frequency noise in multiple graphene devices. The noise may be described electronhole puddles in the graphene that are caused by trapped charges near the surface of silicon oxide. NANOELECTRONIC MATERIALS
