Acute hip luxation is a common musculoskeletal injury in dogs, with radiographs being the preferred imaging modality for confirming the diagnosis. In large animal and human medicine, ultrasound is often utilized for this purpose. The objectives of this three‐part study were to utilize a canine cadaver model to establish ultrasonographic features of hip luxation and evaluate the accuracy and reliability for diagnosing hip luxation with ultrasound. For the first prospective, exploratory study, a cadaver model was developed that allowed manual luxation and subsequent ultrasonography of the hip joint while in four directions of luxation. For the second prospective, anatomic study, a description of the ultrasonographic features for each direction of luxation was created. For the third prospective diagnostic accuracy, observer agreement study, 16 residency‐trained and intern veterinarians without prior experience in this technique performed randomized, repeated ultrasound exams on cadaver hips assigned as normal or luxated (equally distributed between the 4 directions). A total of 1140 hip ultrasounds were performed with good accuracy (median, 90.8%; range, 61.4–100%), sensitivity (89.5%), and specificity (80.0%) for diagnosing the presence of hip luxation. Accuracy for identifying the correct quadrant of luxation was significantly lower (mean, 58.6%; range, 24.6–90.8%; P < 0.001). Intraobserver accuracy agreement varied widely from none to almost perfect agreement, and interobserver agreement ranged from slight to moderate agreement. The results of this study supported the use of ultrasound for diagnosing the presence of hip luxation but did not support replacing radiographs for diagnosing the direction of luxation.

Postęp genomiki zwierząt domowych, możliwość prowadzenia szerokich porównawczych analiz genomowych oraz powszechna dostępność nowoczesnych narzędzi i technik molekularnych (np. mikromacierze SNP, sekwencjonowanie DNA nowej generacji) zaowocowały identyfikacją wielu mutacji odpowiedzialnych za monogenowe choroby psów (24). Z kolei wiedza o podłożu molekularnym często występujących u psów chorób lub wad o złożonym uwarunkowaniu (np. otyłość, cukrzyca typu 2, dysplazja stawu biodrowego lub łokciowego, wnętrostwo), czyli takich, które zależą od wielu genów oraz czynników środo-wiskowych, a także interakcji między nimi, nie jest tak zaawansowana. Wiedza o markerach genetycznych związanych z predyspozycją do rozwoju takich chorób lub wad jest zatem aktualnym wyzwaniem, ważnym dla wczesnej diagnostyki ryzyka ich powstania, nawet przed pojawieniem się pierwszych objawów.Dysplazja stawu biodrowego (CHD, canine hip dysplasia) to wada rozwojowa układu szkieletowego, która zalicza się do najczęściej występującego zaburzenia u psów. Na rozwój tej wady wpływają zarówno czynniki środowiskowe, jak i geny. Do głównych czynników pozagenetycznych sprzyjających rozwojowi CHD zalicza się m.in.: wysoką masę urodzeniową, nadmierne karmienie prowadzące do szybkiego wzrostu masy ciała, nadmierną suplementację wapniem czy wczesną sterylizację, a także zbyt intensywne obciąże-nie ruchowe psa w okresie wzrostu (16). Najbardziej dynamiczny rozwój tej wady ma miejsce w przedziale wiekowym od 4 do 10 miesięcy. U rosnących szczeniąt pojawiają się początkowo zaburzenia w obrębie elementów łącznotkankowych stawu biodrowego oraz mięśni pasa miednicowego. Prowadzą one do niewłaściwego rozkładu sił przenoszonych w stawie biodrowym i są przyczyną inkogruencji powierzchni stawowych. The prevalence of hip dysplasia in different canine breeds ranges widely, from 1% (for Whippet and Borzoi) to over 70% (for Bulldog and Pug). These differences indicate the presence of genetic variants predisposing to or preventing this disorder in gene pools of particular breeds. Results indicated that injection of a sodium urate suspension into the hip joint of healthy dogs reliably induced synovitis and signs of pain and lameness in the ipsilateral pelvic limb that lasted 24 hours. This model can be used in conjunction with instrumented gait analysis to provide information on gait changes associated with hip joint disease and might be useful for evaluating the efficacy of analgesics or other interventions for the treatment of hip joint disease in dogs.

Abstract: Results of our study suggest that static and dynamic ultrasonography of hip joints in puppies between 16 and 49 days of age is technically feasible but cannot be recommended for detecting puppies that will develop CHD between the ages of 12 and 24 months.
