Static and dynamic ultrasonography for the early diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia

Abstract: Results of our study suggest that static and dynamic ultrasonography of hip joints in puppies between 16 and 49 days of age is technically feasible but cannot be recommended for detecting puppies that will develop CHD between the ages of 12 and 24 months.

“…Although the gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy of the canine hip joint are well described 1,26,27,28 and some references describe the normal ultrasound anatomy of the hip joint. 18,19,21,22,23 no references were found describing the ultrasonographic appearance of canine hip luxation. This study provides descriptions of the ultrasonographic appearance of hip luxation into 4 specific quadrants, with reference images.…”

“…The initial phase of this study describes a cadaver model that allows for luxation of the hip joint with minimal disruption of surrounding tissue and without excessive introduction of gas that might otherwise preclude the use of ultrasonography. Although the gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy of the canine hip joint are well described 1,26,27,28 and some references describe the normal ultrasound anatomy of the hip joint 18,19,21,22,23 . no references were found describing the ultrasonographic appearance of canine hip luxation.…”
