SummaryVolunteers represent a global workforce equivalent to 61 million full‐time workers. A significant decline in volunteering has highlighted the urgency to better understand and address turnover amongst volunteers. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of turnover amongst volunteers. We also examined whether staying or leaving has different predictors. The meta‐analysis integrated and synthesized 117 studies, encompassing 1104 effect sizes across 55 335 volunteer workers, to identify and quantify relationships between turnover and the broad range of variables that have been examined in the volunteer work domain. Amongst the strongest predictors of volunteer turnover were attitudinal variables, in particular, job satisfaction (ρ = −.58), affective commitment (ρ = −.58), engagement (ρ = −.54) and organizational commitment (ρ = −.54). Contextual variables that showed the largest effects included communication (ρ = .62), organizational support (ρ = −.61) and the quality of the relationship between volunteers and their leader (leader‐member exchange, ρ = −.55). We synthesize our findings into an integrative framework delineating the predictors of volunteer turnover. In doing so, we extend turnover research to consider non‐remunerated work contexts and provide a basis for developing turnover theory that is responsive to the unique experience of volunteers.

Despite the growing importance of volunteers to many organizations, there has been little research into how they share their knowledge and develop the skills they need. Moreover, the focus of existing research has been on short-term episodic volunteering. This article addresses these deficits by examining the significance of knowledge sharing to volunteer development and also the relative importance of individual processes. A case study approach is adopted, which focuses on a major heritage site that is heavily reliant on a volunteer workforce. Development of volunteers is particularly relevant to the heritage sector where organizations need a sizeable, stable, and well-trained volunteer workforce. We performed semi-structured interviews with six managers as well as conducting five focus groups with volunteers from diverse work areas in the National Trust. The Volunteer Development through Knowledge Sharing Model is proposed. This is the first conceptual model to summarize the processes in volunteer development. The financial viability of many not-for-profit organisations is linked to community fundraising by volunteers. This study explored predictors of volunteer retention and fundraising performance in relay for life (RFL), an international volunteer communitybased cancer fundraising event. A self-report survey completed by 1298 RFL volunteers (24% response) assessed: satisfaction with volunteering; organisational commitment; psychological sense of connection; motives; social norms; capacity to volunteer as in perceived behavioural control and barriers to volunteering; satisfaction with community; behavioural intention. Primary outcomes were return participation in RFL and funds raised. Returning volunteers reported higher perceived behavioural control and satisfaction with community. Indirect effects through agemoderated intention-to-return were higher satisfaction with volunteering; organisational commitment; psychological sense of connection; capacity to volunteer.Funds raised were higher in teams with volunteers who were older, strongly committed to the organisation and motivate to fight cancer; with low interest in social/entertainment. Strategies to nurture the volunteer-organisation relationship and enhance volunteer capabilities may be most crucial for event success and long-term viability.
