State anxiety and depression as factors modulating and influencing postoperative pain in dental implant surgery. A prospective clinical survey

Abstract: Objetives: To determine whether preoperative state anxiety and depression modulate or influence objective and subjective postoperative pain following dental implant insertion. Study Design: Prospective, clinical study with 7-day follow-up of a sample of 105 subjects who preoperatively completed the state anxiety questionnaire (STAI-E) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and postoperatively, at 2 and 7 days, recorded objective pain with the Semmes-Weinstein mechanical esthesiometer (SW test) and subjective pain… Show more

“…Yet, the relationship between anxiety and pain is not always positive and unidirectional [33], as found by Gómez-de Diego et al [34] in a study with 97 patients submitted to dental implant and by Kain et al [35] in a double blinded clinical trial, placebo-controlled, with women submitted to hysterectomy, where a group received anxiolytic and the other not. In both studies, an association between these constructs was not seen.…”

“…The MBMD survey has not been validated for TMD and the TMD population could represent a unique group in whom chronic anxiety predominates compared with the other psychological factors. Preoperative chronic anxiety has been shown to predict the magnitude of postoperative pain after oral and maxillofacial surgery, 25,26 orthopedic surgery, 27-32 neurosurgery, 33 oncology, 34,35 and general surgery. [36][37][38] The actual nature of the surgical procedure does not appear to influence the effect of chronic anxiety on the magnitude of postoperative pain decrease.…”

“…En la literatura se refleja que el dolor asociado a la técnica, todo y que se lesionan los tejidos orales para su inserción es discreto (19), dependiendo entre otros aspectos de la predisposición del paciente frente al mismo (20). Por otro lado, es frecuente que en implantología, al igual que en otras técnicas quirúrgicas orales, se utilice un antiséptico de manera rutinaria (21).…”
