“…The 2XIIB experiments demonstrated the startup of a neutral beam-sustained plasma by injecting beams into the warm plasma formed with a stream gun at an end wall [20]. Within 2 ms, the plasma density exponentiated to 4 x 10 13 cm -3 , and beta reached 0.4, driven by the injection of 310 A equivalent of 14 keV neutral beams.…”

“…These ions and electrons have energies of the order of 40 keV and 1-4 keV respectively. In the 2XIIB mirror machine, the deuteron ions together with 2-5 % of impurities like proton and carbon are at energies around 14 keV, while the electron energy is of the order of 100 eV (Coensgen et al 1976). ' We have computed the contribution due to the finite Larmor radius for magnetospheric plasmas and also the 2XIIB mirror machine and have found that it constitutes only 1-3 % of the scalar pressure.…”

“…In the ring current, magnetotail, and also in the 2XIIB mirror machine, the electrons are found to be cooler than the ions (Russel & Thorne 1970;Johnson et al 1974;Coensgen et al 1976). Such magnetized plasmas, where the ion temperature T t is larger than the electron temperature T e , can support electronacoustic (EA) waves which propagate almost perpendicular to the magnetic field with frequencies lying between the electron and ion gyrofrequencies.…”

“…Longer confinement times will require yet higher plasma temperatures and larger plasmas. To this end, we have proposed 2 ' that the mirror experimen tal facility (MX) be constructed during FY 78 through 81 for $81.7 million. * Parameters and Goals Figure 53 conceptualizes the MFTF.…”
