Staphylinidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) in Latin America: synopsis, annotated catalog, diversity and distribution

Abstract: The taxonomic diversity of species and genera of Staphylinidae and their distribution in Latin America are discussed and listed/tabulated based on published literature. In total, 11,675 species in 1075 genera are reported from Latin America. South America has the most recorded species for Latin America, 7773 including 7079 endemic species. The four subfamilies with the highest total number of genera including endemic genera are Aleocharinae, Staphylininae, Pselaphinae, and Paederinae. All recorded genera and t… Show more

“…It is a globally distributed subfamily, well represented in higher latitudes but much more diverse in the tropics. Notably, 99 genera and 1684 described species are confined to the Neotropical region alone (Asenjo et al 2019). The true Paederinae diversity is expected to be even higher in this region since the main body of the taxonomic work hitherto conducted on that group was limited to the Holarctic and, to a lesser degree, the Neotropical, Indomalayan and Afrotropical fauna.…”

“…Recently Asenjo et al (2019) added six more genera to Diestotini but without providing any discussion for such arrangement. Three genera were moved to Diestotini from Autaliini ( Eudera , Gansia and Gansiella ; the latter genus was originally described as a diestotine by R. Pace, 2008).…”

“…Philonthina Kirby, 1837 is the most speciose subtribe inside the mega-diverse rove beetle tribe Staphylinini Latreille, 1802 (Chani-Posse et al 2018a), accounting for more than 2800 species classified in 75 genera worldwide. Thirty-five of these occur in Central and South America (CASA) (including Mexico and all other countries of Central and South America) and 24 are endemic to CASA (Chani-Posse et al 2018b;Asenjo et al 2019;Chani-Posse & Ramírez-Salamanca 2020a, 2020bRamírez-Salamanca et al 2020).…”
