Standards and Protocols for Characterization of Algae-Based Biofuels

Abstract: Recently, algae have been considered as the third-generation biofuel feedstock, which can be converted to the precursor chemicals of drop-in fuels via either the algal lipid upgrading (ALU) pathway or the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) pathway. These precursors could be further processed and upgraded to fuels. This article reviews the standards and protocols that are suitable for characterization of drop-in algal biofuels. Applicable ASTM standards and European standards (EN) were summarized. The protocols th… Show more

“…The ultimate goal of the hydroprocessing of algal biofuels is to synthesize drop-in fuels: automobile fuels (gasoline and diesel) and aviation turbine fuels. 152 These fuels are a mixture of different hydrocarbons: The hydrocarbons of gasoline contain typically 4-12 carbon atoms; diesel contains between 12 and 20 carbon atoms per molecule; 153 and jet fuel has a carbon number distribution between about 8 and 16. 154 Besides the catalyst, the parameters of a hydroprocessing process include the reactor configuration, reaction temperature, initial H 2 pressure, residence time etc.…”

“…Transesterification reaction converts triglycerides into methyl esters to meet the specifications of biodiesel standards. Many countries have implemented national standards to promote biodiesel quality and regulate biodiesel production ( Yang et al, 2016 ). Generally, the evaluation of biodiesel properties is based on ASTM D6751-2015c and BS EN 14214-2012 + A1-2019 standards ( BSI, 2019 ; ASTM D6751-20a, 2020 ).…”

“…Fuel density is a main factor affecting the combustion process, which is comprised of "atomization → breakup → mixture" when fuel is pumped into a combustion chamber. According to Yang et al (2016), in order to optimize the combustion process, the temperature and fraction dependence of fuel density must be clearly defined. In Equation 1 and Equation 3, biodiesel density was calculated using two parameters: temperature and fraction.…”
