Standardized Six-Step Approach to the Performance of the Focused Basic Obstetric Ultrasound Examination

Abstract: The new standardized six-step approach to the focused basic obstetric ultrasound examination can be performed successfully and accurately between 18(+0) and 36(+6) weeks of gestation. This standardized approach can be of significant benefit to limited resource settings and in point of care obstetric ultrasound applications.

“…Abuhamad et al have introduced the 6-step approach to the performance of the focused basic obstetric ultrasound examination [7] and have validated its feasibility and accuracy [8]. With proper training, the 6-step approach may be completed in 5 min [8]; it is a most efficient modality in the time-constrained patient encounter of an outreach setting.…”

With proper training, the 6-step approach may be completed in 5 min [8]; it is a most efficient modality in the time-constrained patient encounter of an outreach setting. Though this approach identifies the majority of risk factors impacting maternal morbidity and mortality, it does not standardize the approach to fetal anatomic assessment.…”

“…It follows a customized workflow to scan the desired anatomical location in a consistent way. The robotic US acquisition follows a generic path that is not specific to any scan pattern prescribed for antenatal scanning, like the six-step approach recommended by the International Society of US in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) [11].…”
