The aim of this study is to explore the different handover models and processes available and their efficacy in improving handover communication within nursing practice. The handover of information is a key nursing responsibility that ensures patient outcomes through continuity of care. This process is widely recognised as an opening for error that may comprise patient safety. This paper is an integrative literature review that employed an inductive exploratory design. A computerised database search was employed including CINAHL, PubMed and Science Direct and a manual citation search with included papers limited to papers published 2005-2016, in English with full text freely available. This included a systematic search strategy, a critical appraisal of the papers utilising the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, an inductive data extraction and thematic analysis. Sixteen papers were included in this review. The results detailed that there are various handover models in use, yet there is no evidence that any one model displays superior efficacy. The iSoBAR model and its adaptations remain the only model employed across various specialties. More research is warranted to determine if any handover model displays superior efficacy or transferability.

Objetivo: desenvolver e validar o conteúdo de instrumentos para padronizar a passagem de plantão da enfermagem.Método: estudo de desenvolvimento e validação por consenso de especialistas, conduzido de janeiro a julho de 2019 em hospital do sul do Brasil. Participaram do estudo 24 profissionais de diferentes áreas, incluindo enfermeiros, técnicos e professores de enfermagem, com experiência na passagem de plantão hospitalar. Avaliou-se abrangência, clareza e pertinência dos itens dos instrumentos, sendo validados pelos especialistas sobre cada item dos instrumentos desenvolvidos,obtendo-se índice de concordância de 93%.Resultados: foram elaborados o “Formulário de Passagem de Plantão”, contemplando identificação dos pacientes, informações clínicas e intercorrências de cada turno, e o “Procedimento Operacional Padrão para Passagem de Plantão”, descrevendo atividades a serem realizadas para garantir a transmissão de informações precisas.Considerações finais: os instrumentos elaborados podem nortear a passagem de plantão da enfermagem na prática clínica, promovendo a continuidade e segurança do cuidado.

This study's purpose is to verify its effectiveness upon developing and carrying out the field practicum in problem based learning (PBL) applied handoff communication. The study formed discussion learning groups consisting of senior nursing students in B university, and was developed and operated for the practical training class for handoff communication utilizing the suggested scenario. The evaluation for the overall PBL class was an average point of 4.46±0.43, the evaluation for students' self-capacity was an average point of 4.62±0.49, the evaluation for small group activities for PBL was an average point of 4.69±0.50, and the evaluation for an instructor's role in PBL class was an average of 4.77±0.29. Through the study, upon graduation, senior nursing students transitioning into new nurses ahead of actual duty, are considered more benefited from carrying out practical training in handoff communication in the aspect of adaptation of nursing duty and its handoff communication.
