Standardization Study of Ghritas

Abstract: The standardization of ghritas such as amritaprasa ghrita, brahmi ghrita, chagalyadi ghrita and phala ghrita has been studied. These ghritas are the important Ayurvedic formulations used for peri-natal care of mother and child health. Standardization of ghritas were achieved by organoleptic study, physico-chemical analysis, qualitative analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC), UV - visible spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) fingerprint studies. Qualitative analysis of alcohol… Show more

“…Physico-Chemical Evaluation of both Ghrita Formulations was done as per the methods described in Protocol for testing of Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani medicines, (Ayush, 2008) for the parameters like colour, odour, taste, saponi ication value, iodine value, acid value and refractive index (Shaila and Santosh, 2004)…”

“…It has four fold aims (i) to dissolve/extract/hold the lipid soluble active therapeutic principles from the plants and minerals, (ii) to make use of therapeutic values of ghee, (iii) to preserve the drug/drugs for longer time (enhanced shelf life), and (iv) to enhance and hasten the absorption of drugs, when used topically in fatty medias. [ 7 8 9 ] Kuṅkumādi Ghṛta (KG) is one such Ghṛta based widely used formulation in therapeutics. Ghṛta preparations are mentioned to have shelf life of 16 months as per Ayurvedic classics and shelf life notification of Government of India.…”

“…Ghritas were preparations in which oil or ghee was boiled with prescribed kasaya and kalka (fine paste of herbs) according to the formula until the aqueous portion evaporated and this process is called “avartana”. This process ensured transfer of the active botanical ingredients (ABIs) into the oil base [ 3 , 6 ]. Some researchers claimed that these preparations were drug delivery systems to deliver poorly water soluble contents or in other words, the contents that have good lipid solubility [ 4 , 6 - 10 ].…”

Some researchers claimed that these preparations were drug delivery systems to deliver poorly water soluble contents or in other words, the contents that have good lipid solubility [ 4 , 6 - 10 ]. On the contrary, the ABIs transferred from the decoctions should be polar, hydrophilic components since the extraction was made by boiling the herbals in water [ 3 ].…”
