The yield and quality of an annual crop are highly dependent on uniform and rapid germination of the seeds. In case of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), the germination and field emergence is always a problem as seeds have thick and hard seed coat. Pre-sowing hydro-priming is one of the most suitable, affordable, easily available, and cost-effective techniques in breaking down seed dormancy to enhance germination. Hence, a field experiment was conducted in Surkhet district of Nepal 2020 to assess the effect of different hydro-priming duration on germination and seedling growth of bitter gourd. The experiment was laid out in single factor Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications and seven treatments including different hydro-priming durations (T0: control, T1: 6 hours, T2: 12 hours, T3: 18 hours, T4: 24 hours, T5: 36 hours and T6: 48 hours) of bitter gourd seeds of Palee variety, the most popular variety among the farmers. The highest water uptake and germination were found in 48 hours of seed hydro-primed seeds whereas the lowest water uptake and germination were observed on non-primed seeds. Similarly, the tallest seedling, most vigorous seedling in terms of seedling vigour index I and II was observed in 48 hours hydro-primed seeds followed by 36 hours of seed hydro-priming and shortest seedling and the least vigorous seedling in control. Thus 48 hours of seed hydro-priming was found to be effective for increasing germination and seedling growth in bitter gourd, which needs to be further investigated under large, open-field conditions with different varieties.

Brassicaceae family, it is a cool season crop which grows best in autumn and spring all over the world. Radish is an important root vegetable. It is originated probably in indo-Pakistan subcontinent and western and central China (Bakhsh et al., 2006). In Pakistan, area under the cultivation for radish is 9,769 hectares and total yield was 160,265 tons, whereas in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, there was 1,038 hectares total area for radish cultivation and yield was 12,858 tones (MNSF, 2015).The radish is famous vegetable grown in both tropical and temperate regions. Radish are annual as well as biennial, but if the soil temperature is below 13°C, the germination percentage fastly declines. When the crop grows and get established at average temperature (10°C-18°C) and small day length so the best quality, size and shape of radish root can be obtained (Bodson et al., 2000). Radish can be cultivated on all types of Abstract | The study was conducted at Agriculture Research Station Baffa Mansehra (ARSBM), Khyber Pukhtunkhwa in winter 2016, from the behalf of Agriculture University Peshawar, on the influence of priming of seed on radish cv. Green Neck with various nutrient sources; water and 1 % of P solution of DAP, SSP, 1% K solution of KCl and 0.01 % B solution of boric acid at different priming durations with 6 hours interval (06, 12, 18, 24 hours). Un-soaked dried seeds were used as control. Research comprised of two factors i.e. sources and priming durations. There were 25 treatments having three replications. Priming seed significantly affected the germination and vegetative attributes of radish. The result of experiment showed that the highest germination percentage (86.4 %), percentage of survival (83.6 %), minimum days to emergence (9.1), tallest plant height (41 cm), yield of leaves plant -1 (14.4), leaf area (295.8 cm 2 ), root length (20.6 cm), root weight in g (522.4) root diameter in cm (4.51), and total yield (23.8 tones ha -1 ) were obtained when seeds were soaked in DAP solution. In case of storage duration, The maximum germination percentage (82.5 %), survival percentage (84.4 %), plant height (43.7cm), ), total yield of leaves plant -1 (14.2 g), area of leaf (293 cm 2 ), root diameter (4.50 cm), root length (20 cm), root weight (524.7g) and total yield ha -1 (23.9tonesha -1 ) were observed when seeds were primed for 18 hours priming duration in Di-ammonium phosphate DAP solution. Incase DAP, showed excellent performance in germination, growth and yield. While KCl also gave better results in most of parameters.

Calidad fisiológica y energía de germinación de semillas de balsamina (Momordica charantia L.)Physiological quality and germination energy of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) seeds RESUMENLas semillas de balsamina presentan dificultad en la germinación debido a la testa gruesa y dura que rodea al embrión. El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto que tiene la imbibición de semillas de balsamina en agua sobre la energía de germinación, velocidad absoluta de germinación e índice de germinación. Se utilizó diseño experimental completamente al azar con tres tratamientos: T0 (control, sin imbibición en agua), T1 (semillas embebidas en agua a 22°C durante 24 horas) y T2 (semillas embebidas en agua a 50°C durante 60 minutos). El tratamiento T1 se recomienda respecto a los otros tratamientos porque mejoró la energía de germinación (48%), tasa absoluta de germinación (8,6 semillas•día-1) e índice de germinación (11,5).Palabras clave: imbibición de semillas en agua, tasa absoluta de germinación, tratamientos de pre-germinación. ABSTRACTBitter gourd seeds present germination difficulties due to the thick and hard seed coat that surrounds the embryo. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of bitter gourd seed imbibition on germination energy, absolute rate of germination, and germination index. A completely randomized experimental design with three treatments was used: T0 (control, without imbibition), T1 (seed imbibition at 22°C during 24 hours), and T2 (seed imbibition at 50°C during 60 minutes). Treatment T1 is recommended over the other Barraza et al.-Germinación de semillas de balsamina treatments, because it improved germination energy (48%), absolute rate of germination (8.6 seeds•day-1), and germination index (11.5).
