Standardised Outcomes in Nephrology – Chronic Kidney Disease (SONG-CKD): a protocol for establishing a core outcome set for adults with chronic kidney disease who do not require kidney replacement therapy

Abstract: Background Globally, over 1.2 million people die from chronic kidney disease (CKD) every year. Patients with CKD are up to 10 times more likely to die prematurely than progress to kidney failure requiring kidney replacement therapy. The burden of symptoms and impaired quality of life in CKD may be compounded by comorbidities and treatment side effects. However, patient-important outcomes remain inconsistently and infrequently reported in trials in patients with CKD, which can limit evidence-inf… Show more

“…The Kidney Health Initiative, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the American Society of Nephrology (1,30) have identified a better understanding of the effect of the burden of symptoms on CKD patient outcomes as a priority. In the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology initiative, patients on hemodialysis rated fatigue as one of the most important aspects of their disease (31). A novel paradigm of this study was the use of the symptom KDQOL-36 dimension to classify CKD patients into evolution trajectories.…”

“…This is an ongoing challenge in nephrology trials, and the production of a core outcome set in trials of people with CKD will improve the relevance, transparency, and effect of future research. 94 The outcomes reported in the dietary trials are not included in previous standardized outcomes in the nephrology outcome sets but are of particular importance when discussing lifestyle trials. 95 The 2020 KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition 96 now recommend that patients adopt dietary patterns, such as a Mediterranean style approach to eating.…”

“…Heterogeneity and lack of standardization exists across all endpoints in CKD. This is being addressed by the Standardised Outcomes in Nephrology (SONG)-CKD initiative, which will include multiple stakeholders, both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and non-HCPs, and will address PRO instruments [ 50 ]. The present study is focused on patients and patient outcomes.…”
