Abstract:The effects of input heat of different welding processes on the microstructure, corrosion, and mechanical characteristics of welded duplex stainless steel (DSS) are reviewed. Austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is welded using low-heat inputs. However, owing to differences in the physical metallurgy between ASS and DSS, low-heat inputs should be avoided for DSS. This review highlights the differences in solidification mode and transformation characteristics between ASS and DSS with regard to the heat input in welding processes. Specifically, many studies about the effects of heat energy input in welding process on the pitting corrosion, intergranular stress, stress-corrosion cracking, and mechanical properties of weldments of DSS are reviewed.

ResumoO corte a plasma de aço inoxidável tem história relativamente nova em comparação com outros meios de corte de metais. Frequentemente os usuários de corte plasma se deparam com questões específicas ao corte do aço inoxidável, como qualidade de corte, velocidade de corte, custo operacional e alterações nas propriedades metalúrgicas. Nos últimos vinte anos as tecnologias aplicadas no corte plasma do aço inoxidável tem evoluído com resultados atrativos nos últimos cinco anos. Estas tecnologias versam com alterações na mistura dos gases de plasma e de proteção, ou ainda, na mudança dos bicos de corte plasma buscando melhor constrição do arco plasma, e a devida seleção de gases em função da espessura de corte. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido através de revisão bibliográfica das principais tecnologias apresentadas pela indústria nas últimas duas décadas para o corte de aço inoxidável com plasma, e testes laboratoriais de corte com as últimas tecnologias de corte. Entre os resultados estão a redução até a eliminação da escória pós-corte, uma borda de corte menos arredondada, melhora na coloração da superfície e diminuição da zona afetada pelo calor na peça de trabalho. A importância do trabalho se dá pelo aumento da participação do uso do aço inoxidável dada a sua importância para a economia, em especial nos setores de energia, processamento de alimentos, papel e celulose e transportes que necessitam de melhorias no corte deste metal e suas ligas. THE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES OF PLASMA CUTTING FOR STAINLESS STEEL AbstractThe stainless steel plasma arc cutting technology history is relatively new compared to other metal cutting process. Often, plasma arc cutting users have questionsregarding to the stainless steel cutting, such as cutting quality, cutting speed, operating costs and changes in metallurgical properties. For the last twenty years, the technology in the stainless steel plasma cutting has evolved a lot, with significant results in the last five years. These technologies are very muchrelated with changes in the mixing of plasma gases and shield gases, yetwith the change of plasma cutting nozzles for better constriction of the plasma arc, and the proper selection of gases depending on thickness. This work was developed through a review of the key technologies for stainless steel plasma arc cutting introduced by the industry in the last two decades, and tests performed in laboratory using the latest cutting technologies. The outcomes are the reduction and even the elimination of post-cutting dross, a less rounded cutting edge, an improved surface color and reduction in the heat affected zone in the work piece. The importance of this work is related to an increased participation of the use of stainless steel, especially in the energy, food processing, pulp and paper and transportation, which need improvements in cutting of stainless steel its alloys.

Anti-Corrosion Application of Poly(indole-5-carboxylic Acid) Coating on Low Nickel Stainless Steel in Acidic Medium

Poly(indole-5-carboxylic acid) (PICA) has been synthesized by electrochemical polymerization technique from different concentration of poly(indole-5-carboxylic acid) using lithium per chloride as oxidation agent at different scan rate. The as-synthesized PICA was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H-NMR). Thermal analysis of the PICA was performed by Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The corrosion protection performance of low nickel stainless steel (LN SS) specimens coated with 0.1 M concentration of PICA was investigated in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 medium using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) methods. The morphological properties of the polymer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The as-synthesized PICA has been used in order to achieve adherent, as well as environmentally preferential good anti-corrosive coating. Electrochemical corrosion tests and surface analysis results evidently showed that PICA coating served as a stable mass matrix on LN SS against corrosion. It was also revealed that the coating of PICA at 0.1V scan rate with 0.1M indole-5-carboxylic acid exhibited the best corrosion resistance among all concentrations.
