Stability, Viscosity, and Tribology Properties of Polyol Ester Oil-Based Biolubricant Filled with TEMPO-Oxidized Bacterial Cellulose Nanofiber

Abstract: This research is aimed at studying the stability and tribology properties of the polyol ester oil- (POE-) based biolubricant mixed with various filler loadings from microparticle of TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose (NDCt) as an additive and sorbitan monostearate (Span 60) as a surfactant. Morphology, rheology, and tribology tests were conducted. The addition of NDCt and Span 60 to pure POE as a base fluid showed elevated viscosity, lower value of coefficient friction (COF), and a remarkable decrease in the w… Show more

“…However, even though it can drastically improve properties, some nanoparticle mentioned above is not environmentally friendly and very expensive. One of the most abundant biopolymers is cellulose which is produced from algae, tunicates, certain bacteria, and plant-based materials [15,16]. This type of compound is also suitable as a lubricant additive.…”

“…Figure 5 shows the stability of the lubricant as a function of time, evaluated by capturing the image of the lubricant in a clear container. Such a stability evaluation method has been applied in many works, such as (Oliveira et al, 2017;Awang et al, 2019;Periyasamy et al, 2020;Rahmadiawan et al, 2021a). Images at day 1 indicate the lubricant after 1-h sonification.…”

“…It is shown that the additive has good dispersion stability with the lubricant and improves the friction and wear of the material. Mixing various volume percentages of bacterial cellulose (BC) into polyol ester (POE) oil as a base lubricant can reduce friction and wear of the material from 5 to 10% (Rahmadiawan et al, 2021a).…”
