Stability of the Bayley II Scales of Infant Development in a sample of low‐risk and high‐risk infants

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the stability of the second edition of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley II) by correlating Bayley II scores during the first year of life with Bayley II scores at approximately 18 months of age. Bayley II Mental and Motor Scales were administered to 119 infants (69 males, 50 females) during their first year of life; mean age for low‐risk group 7 months (SD 3.01) and mean age for high‐risk group 7.8 months (SD 2.46). A second set of Bayley II scores was collec… Show more

“…The drop in BSID-II scores from 9 months to 30 months was not expected for normal infants and toddlers (Harris, et al, 2005;Niccols and Latchman, 2002) and may be important. This finding does not appear to be related to administration of the test as scoring reliabilities were uniformly high and the variability around the BSID-II means was similar to what would have been expected if US children had been examined.…”

“…Few international studies were conducted to investigate the stability of this population concerning mental performance 11,14,22 . Bayley Scales assess each stage development level and their main feature is to enable the diagnosis of developmental delay and enable the planning of intervention strategies 15 .The measure of stability in repeated assessments is important to assess the progress of these children .…”
