Stability of mismatch negativity event‐related potentials in a multisite study

Abstract: ObjectivesMismatch negativity (MMN), an auditory event‐related potential sensitive to deviance detection, is smaller in schizophrenia and psychosis risk. In a multisite study, a regression approach to account for effects of site and age (12–35 years) was evaluated alongside the one‐year stability of MMN.MethodsStability of frequency, duration, and frequency + duration (double) deviant MMN was assessed in 167 healthy subjects, tested on two occasions, separated by 52 weeks, at one of eight sites. Linear regress… Show more

“…First, the test-retest reliability of the proposed biomarker. Generally, previous studies have shown promising results for the MMN, with high intra-class correlation coefficients (up to > 0.90) and other stability measures in both healthy and clinical populations ( Light et al, 2012 ; Roach et al, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2021 ), consistent with the idea that ERPs tend to be idiosyncratic in their expression, but reliable within individuals ( Gaspar et al, 2011 ). However, a dedicated test-retest reliability study for the specific MMN variant in this article has not yet been conducted.…”

“…Moreover, there is scant evidence that patients demonstrate surprise to unpredicted information. Instead, a large number of studies has shown decreased, rather than increased, responses to oddballs (i.e., surprising events) in patients (Corcoran et al, 2018; Farkas et al, 2015; Hederih et al, 2021; Koshiyama et al, 2020; Lappe et al, 2013; Neuhaus et al, 2013; Roach et al, 2020). In fact, the relationship between MMN reduction in schizophrenia, and positive symptoms in schizophrenia are unclear.…”

“…This procedure results in an HC MMN mean (SD) z score of 0 (1), with more positive z scores reflecting more deficient (ie, less negative) MMN amplitudes. This approach, which we have used previously, only removes normal aging and site-specific associations while retaining any pathological aging associations in the CHR-P data.…”
