Stabilities, and electronic and piezoelectric properties of two-dimensional tin dichalcogenide derived Janus monolayers

Abstract: First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the stabilities, and electronic and piezoelectric properties of Janus SnXY monolayers (X = O, S, Se, Te; Y = O, S, Se, Te; X ≠ Y).

“…Recently, a new family of TMDs, Janus transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (Janus TMDs, MXY, X≠Y) have been synthesized based on either MoS 2 or MoSe 2 monolayer by using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method . Since then, various kinds of 2D Janus TMDs have been investigated theoretically . Unlike the conventional TMDs, Janus TMDs can break the intrinsic in‐plane symmetry and out‐of‐plane mirror symmetry directly, resulting in enhanced in‐plane piezoelectricity and additional out‐of‐plane piezoelectricity .…”

“…First, to apply these applications in real life, the top priority is to fabricate all these Janus 2D materials experimentally. Although many sophisticated fabrication strategies have been proposed in the earlier literature [8,[45][46][47], only the Janus MoSSe SL has been synthesized successfully so far. Due to the harsh synthesis conditions (precise control of temperature and composition), very low production of Janus MoSSe SL can be achieved.…”

“…Apart from the case of Te-containing Janus materials, all the calculated band gaps vary with the X, Y-composition in the range of 0.33-1.74 eV, corresponding to the infra-red and near visible regions of the lightspectrum. [77] Besides composition, the electronic properties of the MXY systems depend also on the specific phase (see also Fig. 1) as the band gap for the 1-T and 1-H phases can be profoundly different.…”
