“…Interestingly, we found that RANKL levels positively correlated with waist circumference. The correlation between a central obesity parameter, as the waist circumference, and RANKL levels detected in serum and saliva samples has been previously demonstrated (40). Our data confirmed that visceral fat accumulation represents the main parameter which can predict the entity of bone impairment in obese subjects.…”

“…While in another study (39) sRANKL concentrations were higher in boys than in girls and increased with age and body weight percentile. In a total scholar population of 600 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years, higher sRANKL levels were found in those with central obesity determined by the WC and negatively correlated with HDL-C (40). In contrast, in another study, sRANKL levels in groups of obese children did not differ compared to the control group and did not correlate with parameters describing nutritional status (41,42) and with atherogenic and insulin resistance indices (41).…”

“…RANKL concentrations have to be differentiated into total RANKL and freely soluble RANKL. As in most other studies, free soluble RANKL levels were measured [ 5 7 , 32 ]. Another study investigated the total RANKL levels, but specified that it is unknown whether the detected levels and activities of sRANKL are correlated to the membrane-bound protein [ 30 ].…”
