“…We mainly used the platinum based chemotherapy in our institution due to its known activity against epithelial ovarian cancer and squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix (Omura et al, 1985;McGuire et al, 1996;Piccart et al, 2000;Zenetta et al, 2000). There were several previous studies supporting combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin as active agents in malignant transformation arising from mature cystic teratoma and reported that most patients had an extended progression-free interval (Eltabbakh et al, 1998;Ohtani et al, 2000;Powell et al, 2003;Dos Santos et al, 2007;Yamagami et al, 2007;Arioz et al, 2008;Sakuma et al, 2010). From those literatures, we mostly used combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel and cisplatin/carboplatin in our patients and found overall response rate around 60%.…”

“…1,5,7 Squamous cell carcinoma make up almost 85% of the malign transformation cases in mature cystic teratoma. 1,2,7,8 Adenocarcinoma, carcinoid tumor, malign melanoma, sebaseous carcinoma, carcinosarcoma, small cell carcinoma, sarcoma (leiomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma) have also been reported. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] In this study incidence rates of the tumors are similar to the literature with the incidence rate of squamous cell carcinoma was found (33,3%).…”

“…Suspicious areas like a hemorrhagic, necrotic nodule or an abnormal thickening of a cyst wall should always be sampled in order to exclude a second malignancy like a squamous cell carcinoma [73] . Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for 75-85% of the malignant degeneration while adenocarcinoma has been reported to occur in 6.8% of cases [74,75] . Malignant transformation of a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary occurs in approximately 2% of all cases and is more likely when the age of the woman exceeds the age of 40 [76,77] .…”
