SQL/XML is making good progress

Abstract: Not very long ago, we discussed the creation of a new part of SQL, XML-Related Specifications (SQL/XML), in this column [1]. At the time, we referred to the work that had been done as "infrastructure". We are pleased to be able to say that significant progress has been made, and SQL/XML [2] is now going out for the first formal stage of processing, Final Committee Draft (FCD) ballot, in ISO/IEC JTC1.In our previous column, we described the mapping of SQL 〈identifier〉s to XML Names, SQL data types to XML Schema… Show more

“…As MPEG-7 bases on X M L schema, one dents to use X M L based query languages such as e.g., XPath [6], XQuery [7] or SQL/XML [8]. In general, XPath provides access to individual parts of data elements in X M L documents but supports no means for e.g, grouping or joins.…”

“…SQL/XML is an extension to SQL, using functions and operators, to include processing of XML data in relational stores. The SQL/XML operators [11] make it possible to query and access XML content as part of normal SQL operations and also provide methods for generating XML from the result of an SQL Select statement. The SQL/XML operators allow XPath expressions to be used to access a subset of the nodes in the XML view.…”

“…With the introduction of the XML datatype for typing XML data in SQL via SQL/XML standard [6] [7][8], Oracle XMLDB enables users to store XML natively in object relational DBMS via the use of XMLType tables and views. Furthermore, users can convert their relational data into XMLType views using SQL/XML publishing functions, such as XMLElement(), XMLConcat() etc., defined by SQL:2003 [8] standard.…”
