Sprengel's deformity

Abstract: A unique specimen of unilateral Sprengel's deformity, and contralateral normal pectoral girdle, were studied morphologically and roentgenographically. The cervical spine exhibited multiple abnormalities involving both the vertebral centra as well as the posterior elements (Klippel-Feil abnormality). A small spina bifida involving C5 and C6 was present. Abnormalities of the spinous processes included an articulation with a well-formed omovertebral bone that also articulated with the vertebral (infraspinatus) ma… Show more

“…Cho et al, 3 using 3-dimensional computed tomography scans, identified no anomalies in the glenoid version in these children. Ogden et al 13 reported that the acromial end of the clavicle had a greater curvature on the involved side but did not appear to limit shoulder elevation.…”

“…The affected scapula is not only malpositioned but also dysplastic. It has been described as hypoplastic, 2,4,11,12,[15][16][17] with a decreased height-to-width ratio, 5,11,12,15,16 and occasionally with an anteriorly curved supraspinous process. 2,11,12,15 There have been, however, few reports of quantitative measurements.…”

“…There is only one description of a cadaver specimen with a Sprengel deformity in the English literature. 5 Three-dimensional CT (3D-CT) has been found to be useful in defining complex anatomical structures. 6,7 We have therefore assessed the Sprengel deformity by this method in order to clarify the anatomical abnormalities and to plan surgical treatment.…”

“…This defect was first described by Willett and Walsham [1880] (interestingly, Sprengel does not mention OB in his paper). Anatomical investigations related to surgical removal [Ogden et al, 1979] describe the articulation of the OB with the spine as either osseous or cartilaginous with the transverse and/or spinous processes of the lower cervical vertebrae. The articulation with the scapula can be either osseous, cartilaginous, or ligamentous.…”

“…They favor the second hypothesis. The anatomy of the scapula in animals was discussed by Oxnard [1968] and subsequently discussed in the context of the origin of the OB by Ogden et al [1979]. Certain fishes have one or two additional structures (the cleithrum and supracleithrum) that are intimately related to the scapula in development and function [Howell, 1933a,b].…”
